Volvo 230B 1993 backfire through carb, won't shut off.

I have a 1993 Volvo 230B with an SP outdrive. I know these engines are cold natured but, when I try to start mine for the first time of the day it backfires through the carb several times before it gets warmed up. Also after it has ran for 15-20 minutes it doesn't want to shut off. I have posted in another thread about my issue of coming up to power while trying to plane. Could this be related?

They may be related.
My initial impression is your timing is off.
Check your plug wires, firing sequence and perhaps get on there with a light.

OK put the light on it. It is running perfect at idle on 0 deg, stlill when I turn the ignition off it tries to keep running and backfires through the carb really bad.

It shouldn't be at 0, at idle (750rpm) it should be at about 10 degrees. Double check your manual for exact rpm and degree. There is also a second reading for high rpm to ensure the advance is working correctly.

You'll find that the more you advance the timing the easier it will start and the higher the idle rpms will run too. So adjust the timing to 10, then reset the rpms to proper idle speed, then reset the timing to 10 degrees again.

It is defineltly the timing. I had already taken the timing light back to my friend. I did adjust a little on the time without the light and the backfiring from the carb went away. I still don't have it perfect and I havne'nt taken it back to the lake yet, but we are heading in the right direction.

I will borrow the light again tomorrow, hit the lake this weekend and let you know how it turns out.
