Volvo 230b hard starting

My 230b runs perfect after a 5 minute warm up. But it is very difficult to start. Often requiring 2000 rpm just to keep it running. Does anyone know how I can get this engine to start easier? Perhaps a new carb with a choke. If the engine is hot it starts instantly without any throttle. I'm concerned the excessive cranking the engine with the starter is going to cause other expensive problems.

I have a an idea that someone has solved this problem in the past. I would very much like a new carb or a rebuild kit. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Volvo 230b hard starting

is this a new issue, or is the boat new to you?

most i/o's can be a bit finicky at first start-up when cold.

your 230B is similar vintage to my 271C.

make sure your carb is clean

all I have to do is pump the throttle twice, disengage the gear shift and bring throttle up. start it, let it run at about 1200 RPM while I park the truck, come back, and the motor is warm enough to run.

Gimlii your boat should start like Scott D's. A pump or two should set the choke, then it should start right up into fast idle and stay there a certain length of time until you goose the throttle, then go to normal idle. You obviously have a choke circuit problem. With the air cleaner off (Ok Ok I know its a spark arrestor) and motor cold, pump the throttle once and look down into the carb. (Engine off) The choke flap should be closed over the top of the carburetor and feeling slightly loose if you poke it with your finger. The fast idle cam on the starboard side should be activated and holding the throttle plates slightly open.
I suspect yours is stuck open by a mechanic or previous owner who thought they were doing something cool and adding 100 more HP without that flap. I've even seen carburetors with that flap removed which is no easy feat on some carbs.

actually there is no choke on those carbs. But the starting process is about the same. A couple pumps and 1/4 - 1/2 throttle then turn the key. Make sure the timing is set and ignition parts are fresh. If you have points, set them with a dwell meter. Hard cold starting are just part of the fun with those OHC motors with no choke carbs.
