From my last thread, the volvo bearing carrier was removed without a problem. I now want to re assemble it to the outdrive. Is there a marine sealant I should use in addition to the o rings? Should I bed the bolts in sealant to keep out the corosion or just use a thread lock compound, and which one is good for salt water applications?

Re: Volvo 290 Bearing Carrier Assembly

Capt, two schools of thought:

If in River/Lake water, usually water proof grease will do the job.
Follow your OEM instructions to be safe!

If in salt water, you can use Permatex # 3, or Quicksilver "Perfect Seal" 92-34227 1, of which is very similar. Either will do a good job at limiting salt water corrosion.
Can be used for fresh water use as well.

It will be sticky next time in, but can easily be softened with a little heat, and can be chemically softened and removed once apart.

As for the bolts..... I'd not thread loc them. The above can be used on them as well.

What did you use on your seals?
Some of the older manuals will suggest water proof grease. It has been proven to allow some seals to slide out of position.
Wish we would have discussed this!

Nice thing about Permatex #3 aviation is that is never fully hardens and cleans right up with lacquer thinner.

I am a huge fan of the product!
