Brand new here and need some help. I am a new boat owner (Sportcraft 252 I/O) I had a spun prop on the boat so I took it to the dealer. I had them also do a complete service on it because I want to take care of it. I'm not a "mechanic" by trade, so I knew they would do it right. I had NO vibration when I took the boat in. Then installed a new prop on the outdrive and now when I turn left or right going slow I get rumbles/vibrations. I find it very weird that I never had that problem until the dealer put a new prop on it. Now he say's I have to pull the boat and take it back to him. What a pain in the rear! I am trying to take care of this 95' Sportcraft correctly because its a very nice boat.

Rumble/Vibration after prop change make any sense??

Thank you all.

What's the full model number of your engine, and what drive do you have?

Hey Don,

The motor is a Penta 5.0FL. Being new, I am not sure exactly what model outdrive it is but I know it does state Volvo Penta on it. The boat is a 1995 Sportcraft 252.

Post a picture of your drive.

I would also put the old prop back on and see if the issue goes away. If it does, then it's obviously something with that prop.

You have the SX drive for future reference, I would still try the old prop before doing anything.

When was the last time the drive was removed for regular service? Alignment check, greasing the coupler splines, checking bellows for water, ujoint check, gimbal bearing check.. It SHOULD be done every year.

Don, I just bought the boat about 2 months ago. I am not only new here, but new to having a large boat like this. We are on Lake Erie. I just spoke with the dealer who changed the prop and fluids a few weeks ago and they are saying its the ujoints. They say the reason I didn't notice it before is because I had an aluminum prop and now have a stainless prop which is much heavier. I really hate being in the position I am in. I am not knowledgable enough to know if they are right and I hope I don't get taken advantage of. I asked how much it would cost to change the u joints and they said they would call me back and let me know. It could be $1000 and I wouldn't know if they were being honest or not. I don't like being new to this.

Your advice is appreciated more than you will ever know!

Re: Volvo 5.0 and Volvo Outdrive rumble / vibration

Got lucky and received the maintenance records for this boat! I was looking through it and the past owner took it to the dealer complaining of "loud noise while turning". Dealership changed the following parts:

1. 3853807 - Bearing
2. 3850426 - Rubber Bellows
3. 18-2765 - U-Joint Bellow OMC

Now my question is this work was done on 5/24/2008, so with new parts could it be a case of the u-joints just needing greased?

Pull the drive off and look. All that was 4 years ago....... far from what I consider "New parts"

That drive needs pulled yearly at least just to grease the coupler shaft splines. Or you could find yourself pulling the engine to replace the coupler.

Your dealer might say it's a possibility the problem is the ujoints, but like anyone else, he doesn't know until he pulls the drive and looks.
There is also no one here that can tell you what is wrong without looking, we can only tell you what we have experienced.
This is a DIY forum, for those that want to fix things themselves. So pull your drive and have a look, take some pictures and ask some questions.

This may help too.

Don,

I understand the purpose of the forum. I am just getting all my ducks in a row and sneaking up on the project! lol I am mechanically inclined but I am not a mechanic and I'm just trying to grab all the info. I can before I yank the stern drive off of it. Never done that, so I am moving cautiously to make sure I get it done right!

I feel with the expert knowledge here on this forum, I will be fine. Stay tuned for pics.

Re: Volvo 5.0 and Volvo Outdrive rumble / vibration

With the help of this forum and diagrams the Don S sent me and with the help of the manual i was able to replace a snapped u-joint last year. Mine also started vibrating really bad and when i made a hard right turn it snapped. It took me several weeks to complete the job but i did do it and it ran so sweet this past summer! Thank you all for your assistance. I went to marinepartsexpress.com to look at the details and parts involved. I found the new u-joint of ebay for 425$ and replaced the bellows for drive and exhaust while i was in there. You can do it!

Re: Volvo 5.0 and Volvo Outdrive rumble / vibration

The first thing I am going to do is replace the prop. I had the boat to the dealer about 3 weeks ago and they said the aluminum prop was spun. The boat did not vibrate at all with the old aluminum prop. The dealership put on a stainless steel prop and that's when I started to get the vibrations when turning to port or stbd. I'm going to put a new aluminum prop on it and see if the vibration goes away. I have read stories here where people have gotten out of balance props before. All a learning process.

Just an update on this issue. I changed the prop on the boat this weekend and the vibration when I turn to port and stbd is gone! Great news! The prop that was on it was put on by the dealer and was stainless steel. The prop I put on it this weekend was aluminum and the boat liked that prop a lot better.
