I have a Volvo 5.0GL torn down to a short block because I blew both head gaskets after a unknown cooling system problem. While it is torn down this far I thought it would be a good idea to add some performance upgrades. When I dropped off the heads at the machine shop I asked them about upgrades, they said I could upgrade the CAM and CARB. They could not suggest a cam becuase they did not know what the stock Volvo CAM is. I have the original tech sheet that came with the boat when I bought it so I know the bore/stroke and compression of the block but there is nothing about the CAM on here. Does anyone have the specs of the stock Volvo cam?

Thanks,

Robert..

And how do you know that? Volvo doesn't publish cam specs, and neither does Mercruiser. I will agree that a Chevy truck/RV cam is similar, but not so much on just a standard pickup.

Re: Volvo 5.0GL camshaft specs?

Well, Machine shop just called and both heads are cracked so I need new heads. Guy said about $265.00 each for remanufactured.

My delima now is do I fix the heads or drop in a 5.7L long block.
What is the possibility the exhaust risers are cracked if both heads are cracked? Temp gauge was pegged out at 250degrees when I turned engine off.

Then I am also concerned about my block. I don't think it is damaged but did hear an odd noise once when turning it over, could have been the starter though. There was no water in the oil, the block still had water in it when I pulled the drain plugs 8 days later and it turns over smooth with a socket and rachet. Any other way to tell if it is damaged? What is the possibility the exhaust risers are cracked if both heads are cracked?

Thanks,

Robert..

Ayuh,.... What's yer Budget,..?? That'll answer some of yer questions....

The risers, could have been cracked,...
Hard to say,... I know cast iron don't mind the heat so much, it's the throwin' cold water in 'em that does 'em in...

There's No doubt that the block has been compromised, but the question is How Badly...
It could run another couple of thousand hours, or a few minutes,...
Ya haven't found any issues of note, but more testin' is in order...
Or,...
Use the Excuse to drop in a Brand New bobtail motor, of yer choice... 350,..?? 383,..??

Well,.... The 305 hasn't been used in anything bigger than a pickup, or van,....

Yer Right,... I have no clue what Volvo uses for a bumpstick,...
If ya wanta set up a test, 'n dial indicate 1 of each, 'n degree 'em,....

I'll bet $100.00 that the differences, if there are any, are infinitesimal, 'n irrelevant... ;)
