Is there a way other than a tag to determine which vovo 4 cyl motor I have. I just got the boat and have a few reapirs to make it sat for 10 yrs and some new gas and runs great. All cylinders have 120psi or better compression and i have to tighten the valves want to know the specs. The motor has 2 carbs.

Another question is on the volvo penta 280. I need to replace the bellows and shift cable is this a thing a dyr'er should attempt or not.

Re: Volvo aq130 i think

Welcome to the forum. Lot's of good people here willing to help. There should be a tag just forward of the starter with the model number and serial number. If it's not there, pictures will help us get closer to what it is.

As far as what is a DIY project, that's relative to the skill of the person. Many of us here have been able to tackle these routing tasks with a little help from others. But we also learn that routine tasks can sometimes be complicated by additional repairs that are found.

Yes, that's an AQ130. Not sure what's going on with the fuel system but the OEM pump doesn't have the suction line attached. I suspect a homemade electric fuel pump arrangement.

OEM and aftermarket parts for the engine and outdrive are available right here on iboats.

Your compression of 120 is pretty low but may come up a bit after the engine has a few more hours under load on it.

Re: Volvo aq130 i think

yeah if i am looking at it correctly it seems the old fuel pump is still on there all crusted away!

volvo.jpg Highlighted in yellow.

You might have an AQ130D if the engine and outdrive were together from birth that would be correct, as far as i know from the research these are the differences:

AQ130A: Used with the 100 and 250 series drive, ran 9.5:1 compression ratio and used Stromberg carbs. Rated at 130 hp.

AQ130B: Used with the 100 and 250 series drive, ran 8.4:1 compression ratio and used Stromberg carbs. Rated at 115 hp.

AQ130C: Used with the 250 and 270 series drive, ran 9.5:1 compression ratio and used Solex 44PA1 carbs. Rated at 130 hp.

AQ130D: Used with the 280 series drive, ran 9.0:1 compression ratio and used Solex 44PA1 carbs. Rated at 130 hp.

So most likely you have a 280 but as Pirate mentioned, thats not the correct fuel pump and i would do more research on it. because if its an automotive unit that may or may not have to be replaced. i dont know that much about em just puttin in my two cents of info that i researched :p

I had already had them check that out and was told this is a marine fuel pump.

you can go to boatinfo.no and find the manual for AQ130A,B,C you will be looking at the AQ130C information which should be the same as the AQ130D

If you're going to be doing your own maintenance, it's vital that you learn where to find the diagrams. iboats is an authorized VolvoPenta distributor and also sells aftermarket parts. Here's a link to the upper gear box drawing that has the bellows listed: http://www.volvopentastore.com/Upper-Gear-Unit-Aq-Drive-Unit-280-280t-A/dm/*******.098965895--session_id.518128776--store_id.366--view_id.771733

When you go back to find your engine and outdrive for other parts and pieces, start here: http://www.volvopentastore.com/

Keep digging around the parts section of this site and you'll get the hang of it and also see where to find aftermarket parts.

When you get to engine parts, the 130C and 130D are pretty close. Ignition parts like cap and condensor go by distributor model number. Unless you get into internal engine bearings, there isn't really much else different.

New Boat Owner...New Boat Engine Fixer...

New Boat Owner...New Boat Engine Fixer...

Hi. I'm new the Boat Owner's Group. I have always been around boats, but never owned one until now. I have a 1978 Bayliner Cascade. I too have the VolvoPenta 130D/280 set from Original buy. I have a couple of issues and want to make sure the path I take isn't going to run me in the ground. I have water mixing with the oil and it is overheating. Of all the "boat" people and marinas I have talked to, said it could be anything from a cracked block to a blown head gasket. Also seem to have a small water leak from the water cooling manifold. Any direction from experienced Boaters with this engine would be grand.

Thanks,
Keith C.

Hey kieth. welcome aboard. I would recommend reading the sticky post http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=468285
it explains about hijacking threads etc. now i know you did not do this on purpose just giving you a heads up that people dont like it.
In order for you to get the most results the quickest is to post a new thread asking your questions.
once again welcome and i hope all of your questions get answered.

Re: New Boat Owner...New Boat Engine Fixer...

Hey all first thanks for all your help, replaced bellows, u joints and changed oil filter etc. Put the boat in water yesterday (Lake Elsinore) ran great except needing a new thermostat and the fact when i turn it makes a loud banging noise. Pretty sure bearings needing replaced in bell housing any suggestions. Thanks in advance

Hi, I have many years of experience with AQ130`s , re power now for unwonted AQ170 and I love it.
Problem with water mixed with oil I had before.
You may need to take apart your oil cooler unit which is usual suspect ,get new o-rings for it,clean up core lines.
Head gasket will be secondary suspect.
Ones you service your oil cooler, run your engine for few hours ,if you run engine cold ,water condensation my also cause oil to absorb some water.

Re: New Boat Owner...New Boat Engine Fixer...

I wouldn't be so fast to jump on the thermostat until you check out a few other things first. A common source of air inleakage (and loss of cooling water) is the hose connection on the outdrive. It's called the water neck fitting and is just below the driveline bellows. These corrode from the inside and deterioration may not be visable with the hose attached. When at idle or low speed the fitting is under water but when on plane, it's out of the water and can draw in air. Any leak on the suction side can cause overheating from loss of pump suction so all fitting and components, including the pump impeller and inlet strainer, need to be inspected carefully. With a helper, you can pressurize the suction side of the system and block off the holes in the outdrive to find leaks.

The thermostat is a little spendy so you should really test it before buying another.

As for the banging in the flywheel cover, it's something that can only get worse and more expensive if you run with it. There are a couple of threads on how to do it. There could have been several reasons for the bearing going bad including lack of lubrication since the grease cup is hidden out of the way. However, if the damage was caused by water in the bellows, there could also be problems with a thrust washer inside the upper gearbox. I'd recommend pressure testing the outdrive prior to disassembly to try to find about other seals and gaskets. If you've got a leak from the o-ring in that washer, you've got another item to inspect and possibly replace.
