Volvo aq131a engine swap

Hey guys,

i am having to do a engine swap and just after some infne being what is the dif between the car can of the b230 and a aq131a and if i kept the car cam in what would happen.Also any info would help i have done alot reading on this site and has been great help and for most exsept for a few marine parts this is posibble i just dont have the camshaft for marine and hopeing for now the b250 cam will work.But any help info would sure help thanks...

Not a Volvo expert but cams for autos are different then boats no matter what engine. Autos require torque to come on during the higher rpm range, this allows the auto to move at higher speeds as wind and friction come on stronger by speed. Boats need the torque in the lower rpm range to get the hull out of the water. After the boat is on plane the friction of water continues but picking the boat up is reduced. Don't use an auto cam in a boat engine, you will not like it.

Thanks for the reply thats going to suck then so it will not run or have any power not sure but do not sound good i was hopeing to use the car cam for a while the guy i hired to do the work had no idea about the cam i guess and it all done and ready to put in boat so if i do that ill be in trouble it will not pull the boat along.So i am out a **** load of money and have to start again and get a cam i am sure there be more then just replacing cam.That i dont know ...Well thanks alot

Actually, the cam in a B230F is setup for low end torque. It would be stamped 'M' and it's considered one of the worst automotive cams because it runs out of breath in the top rpm range.

It should actually work pretty well. Believe it or not, the marine cam is a popular swap into cars because it has more high end torque than the automotive cam.

You may lose a little rpm with the B230F cam but it has plenty of low end grunt. With the 'M' cam, your boat should jump out of the water a little easier but you may suffer slightly on the top end.

My boat is a Mercruiser but I'm an expert when it comes to Volvo 4-cylinders, I have built and raced with these engines for years and I know way too much about them.

I would say go ahead and use the car cam, you might be surprised how well it works.

Wow i only wish i knew as much...i know car engines but the marine tents to be alot dam dif.And i just wonna get this baot back in the water dont need it to be super fast we use it for fishing and because it has been in the ocean alot i can not even put it in the lake ,they will not alow it due to some kinda something that sticks to the boat and it ? something to the lake so the inviermentalist say.So thanks alot do not think its a b230f it is stamped just b230 on the block.I had tookall the marine stuff the carb intake ect.off the old engine but the dude who i had trusted to do the work took the old engine and sold it.So i cannot get the cam now.everything else on the engine aq131a was striped and i have all those parts just not the cam.I had to have to tear it down again and put a cam in.iF IT WILL PUSH US IN AND OUT OF THE BAY even a bit slower i am ok with that..Again thanks for your help.If it is ok to mabe pm you sometime if i have any problems because it not all done yet.The engine he pulled from a Volvo car and all he had done was to put some of the marine parts on it.It looks like all the parts seem to bolt up but i need to put on the timeing belt and a fe

It will work fine for you. If you want to PM, you can do that. Just make sure to put your marine starter and alternator on it, that's very important.
