After reading through the Volvo operation manual. It says to 'pump' the throttle once before starting the motor. That's to open the carbs up, similar to pumping the gas pedal on older carbed cars. The fuel pump is mechanical on that motor correct? Typically just pump the throttle once?

If no electronic fuel injector or choke (I would think you don't) then just pump it twice and set it at fast idle to start. Mine won't start worth **** unless I give it a little fuel.

What do you mean 'fast idle'? is that where you put the throttle in forward just a bit?

I pumped it twice and never did get it to start. I did not try the fast idle thing however.

Re: Volvo AQ145A starting

One complete stroke of the throttle does a few things,

one, makes one squirt from the accelerator pump to add a measured amount of fuel

two, closes the choke plate depending upon the temperature

three, adjust the fast idle cam to match the choke opening

If the motor is 'in-tune' it starts, no magic.

145's don't have chokes, unless everything is perfect (yea, like that's gonna happen) it may take 2 or 10 pumps to get it to start and run when cold, or after it has sat for an extended period (weeks/months). Along with keeping the rpm's above 1500 rpms till it warms up enough to run on it's own at idle.

adjust the fast idle cam to match the choke opening

Marine carbs DO NOT have fast idle cams. Especially Volvo 4 cylinder OHC engines that don't have chokes.
