Volvo engine serial number

Hello, Just got a new boat and cannot identify the engine. this is what i got so far. Four cylinder, points distributor, single barrel carb. tag near starter reads, 7705002486, Red engine "volvo' cast into block. 290 grey outdrive left hand prop. this can be changed by reversing or flipping a rod on the outdrive.
So.... Hit me with your best shot. 2months of searching is driving me nuts.

Look at that tag where you found the serial number. You should find some other numbers, what are they?
That serial number doesn't show up, so either the number is wrong, or Volvo's data base doesn't go back that far.

thats all i can find on the engine. there are some dates on the head, Will that help ?? tell ya what
I will take some pictures and post ALL castin numbers and any thinhg else i can find. this is really quite the hunt, auto tells me they have no clue and marine tells me the number should start with a 4.?
I was in the area of the aq 125,131. but dont those come with a twin carbs setup??
ok off to take pics and get numbers.

AQ131?? Any idea what the model year is?

the boat is a "Galaxy" year '91' center console, cuddy. But I DOUBT its the original engine in that hull, The outdrive is a "grey 290" not silver. But who knows.

That serial number doesn't show up, so either the number is wrong, or Volvo's data base doesn't go back that far.

the tag is painted over, the numbers i got are stamped on it. are there numbers usually painted/decal ed n there? should i try stripping off the paint?

AQ131/125's had one carb. The 125b and 131 where very close to the same engine, I don't know what the differences were. In the late 80s, VP changed the model numbers. The AQ131 became the 230A. Thats most likely what you have, a 230A, same as an AQ131.

Some of the engines have a small tag on the block, down low in front of the starter, your's may have one.

Are you just trying to figure out what you have? Or are you trying to find parts?? Or...

i was having trouble with it running and trying to find paert inf ect. but i need to know what i haqve to get specs for pionts plugs timing and the like. I
was thinking the 125 131 as well from pictures and the like. i found the tag. the # is posted in the origional post, but no one seems to be able to tell any thing by that. thanks for the input and i hope i can get this straighted out be fore I need a seriuos part .

the good news is tune up specs for these engines are the same.

Download the manual for the AQ131 from the adults only section and commence tuning.

Let us know if you get hung up on anything.

note, Don S usually recommends setting the dwell toward the top of the spec range, 64-65 Deg.
