Volvo GS 3 Liter not getting full RPM

I cant get more than 3500 RPM out of motor unless I advance the timing. Manual says sould get 4200 RPM to 4600 RPM.<br />The number 1 cylinder is at the f ront of motor? <br />I have recently been given a boat as my father has past away. I know it has the right prop for boat. Can anyone help

Welcome to Iboats.<br />It's basically a common problem, usually it's a matter of a complete tuneup, changing fuel filters, getting everything set to specs, cleaning the bottom and/or trimming the drive properly, or possibly water is getting into the engine through the exhaust.<br />It's going to take some troubleshooting, especially if all the above has been checked, but until we know what's been done and how long it's been since anything has been done, you will probably get a LOT of different suggestions that all fall into the catagories of my beginning paragraph.

yep welcome to the pond<br /> also use your timing light and check WOT advance<br /> not knowing anymore than its a 3.0 is not much to go one. most had points or EST. the EST will sometimes fail to electronically advance the timing. buy a service manual for your rig.<br /> we will walk ya through about anything ya need but try to post model and horsepower

I have been using boat as it runs well just a little slow out of the water and not getting full RMP around 3900. Have done timing, filters, plugs, and compression test. Yes ETS is advancing. Prop has not been changed.

Would a carb kit be worth fitting? Could something be wrong with the Metering system in carb? As boat did sit around for about 4 years on trailer. When cruising at WOT I can pull throttle back slowly (just undert ? throttle movement) and have no power decrease while doing so.

Also I have checked REV counter against a handheld unit

You've only had this problem for almost 5 years?
