I just saw one of these (actually two) for the first time. What a beast! Went over to visit a friend he was rebuilding a pair. One was already done. Cast bronze housing, the horizontal shaft is thicker than the axle in my pickup truck. Not an ounce of aluminum anywhere. He was pressing the bearings on when I pulled up, they're wider than my hand. He was explaining how each unit is basically custom built...the tolerances and specs are scribed into the housing and shafts. The manual is totally metric - torque specs in Newtons.
The only bad thing with these is that the props are exposed which why they were being rebuilt. Evidently the owner of the 65' Searay these belong to hit something. One of the horizontals was bent pretty bad. Wish I had seen the prop!
