I have an AQ130C/270 combo in my Chrysler Sport fury and well the AQ130C is in pieces. Was the volvo penta outdrives (270 to be more exact) only available with volvo motors mated? Just curious before I start looking for a replacement motor and to see what available options the 270 outdrives had, thanks!

in a stock configuration in a new boat, yes they were always mated accordingly, but aftermarket, you can really put any block behind it with the right coupler. we have volvo penta 280's on our boat(fairly simular) and we have mercruiser inboard engines behind them...(not a very common pair up)

when you say coupler, you're talking about the bellhousing I assume? I suppose if man made it, man can alterate it right? So next question is who makes aftermarket couplers then? thanks!

Re: Volvo Penta 270 outdrive/AQ130C combo question

depending on the engine you choose, it could be as simple as a bell housing and flexplate(we stole the flexplate off our old engines, new bellhousings bolted right up), or you may need a coupler to bolt to the flywheel. Im not sure where these are availible, i have only seen them on other peoples projects.

you shouldnt have a problem with any v8 engine, from what i can see the 280(what we have) and 270 are the same in the front. so its should be fairly straight forward. bell housing and flexplate will be all you need, if your lucky the ones on the current engine will work.

pm me if you need a bell housing, might be able to help u.

Re: Volvo Penta 270 outdrive/AQ130C combo question

If you try to go to a 6 or 8 cylinder motor, the gear ratio in the drive will be incorrect, the exhaust won't hook up, the flywheel cover will not bolt up, etc.

Not as straightforward as you may like.:)

Whats wrong with the engine you have besides being in pieces?

Re: Volvo Penta 270 outdrive/AQ130C combo question

well it's missing the head, the block has been unbolted from the bellhousing and just sitting there and it's been uncovered for a couple of years. I am thinking of putting in another 4 cylinder, just not the AQ130C. I am a big chrysler fan and would like to throw a chrysler motor in there. I was thinking of a 2.2 or 2.5 commonblock as they are fairly stout and would love to do a turbo motor in one.

Foreget about that. You will never be able to mate a motor like that up.

As far as turbo is concerned, you also can't do that. Too hot!

I suppose the motor well needs to be as cool as it can be? What are some problems that arise when the motor wells become too hot?

overheating = scoring cylinder walls, damaging pistons, damaging rods(really overheating could cause the rods to shoot out the side of the block) head gasket could go, valves could get damaged, teh list goes on... the cooling in the leg will be sufficient if that is what you are refering too. Thanks bruce, i forgot about the exhaust yoke, if you convert to a v8 you will need one that has 2 ends... or you convert to thru hull, like we did becuase our yokes were shot, and we found a killer deal on tips on ebay

I wasn't referring to the actual motor overheating, but keeping the temps down in the motor well. I assume that's why the exhaust manifolds have water passages in them, to keep the motor well cooler without having alot of radiating heat.

if the engine is properly cooled, there is no reason for the engine bay to get very hot.

and yeah, thats why they are all wet exhaust, to keep the heat down
