I just purchased a beatiful Four Winns 205 sports cruiser with what was advertised as a 5.0 gl but it now turns out it has had a 5.7 votec installed due to a previous engine failure.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260811979604&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:GB:1123

It has a Holley 2 bore carb which i expect was just swapped over from the previous engine and for some reason there was water in the fuel tank for reasons still unexplained from the previous owner.

The water pump housing was worn so I had this re-machined to ori spec and a new impeller installed... since then it pumps water perfectly.

So it would start on the muffs and run for around 2 or three minutes before cutting out then again i would start it again and it would run 2-3 minutes and cut out... i did this over and over trying to diagnose a faulty alternator.

I must have had the engine run now for around 20 mins on the muffs in total and I have found a slight milky look to the oil... I stripped the carb and about 50% fuel and 50% water poured out.

My terrified question is this... Could water injected through the carb cause the engine oil to turn slighly milky?

I know that a cracked block or blown head gasket would cause this but it runs very well at idle and my hope is that once I recon the carb, drain and refill the fuel that there is a chance the engine is actually ok.

Best wishes,

Stan

It would get into the cylinders and with enough water prevent the engine from running, but it would not get into the oil.

Your 2-3 minute running problem could be water, not sure how. But if the fuel pump was only working when the engine cranked over during starting, the engine would only run for 20 seconds or so, not minutes.

Thanks Don,

I understand that the water in the oil can have something to do with the manifolds, is there an easy way to check where it's coming from?

Best wishes,

Water is not going to get into the oil from the manifolds it would leak into the exhaust passage of the manifolds and into the cylinder that happens to have the valve open. From there, it would have to leak past the rings.
It will also not happen when the engine is running, the exhaust would blow the water out the exhaust.

Rebuilt the carb today after a good soaking in diesel and carb cleaner, the bowl was full of water and their was a lot of gunk and grime removed. Ran the boat again and timed the runs to approximately 1min 15 secs every time before it cut out. I suspected a fuel pump problem so ran the pump on my own external 12v power supply and hey presto, she would run all night.

I checked the oil level and marked on the dipstick which was still milky and then ran on the muffs for 20mins. Checked the oil after this and it seemed much cleaner, like water had evaporated and the level was certainly no higher! I think im in the clear as far as cracks go.

Just need to solve the issue with the fuel cutting which I have been told is related to an oil pressure switch???

Any advice as always is graciously received.

Regards,

Stan

Unless you have a Mercruiser, you don't have an oil pressure switch controlling the fuel pump. You do have a relay and power coming in through diodes from the start relay and the alternator.
What is the full model number or the serial number for your engine?

What year is it? That will help narrow it down.

Ok, going to assume this to be setup like an EF model. Below is a link to download the wiring diagram (.pdf thumbnail) below. It gives you the wire color code for the alternator wiring.
From your pictures, it looks like the fuel pump relay has also been replaced with something else. So color codes for them will have to be ID'ed.
You mentioned earlier that:
I suspected a fuel pump problem so ran the pump on my own external 12v power supply and hey presto, she would run all night.
How did you hook up your power supply? Did you go directly to the fuel pump?
Can you remove your fuel pump relay nd look at the relay socket and verify that it's wired like this picture.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.0/5.7 Running Issues - pics

Ok, starting issue located to neutral safety switch and resolved... Thank heavens :)

Alternator is installed and charging the battery well, engine no longer cuts out. Took to the water for a test run on her own legs and runs up to 1500rpm well. When more throttle is applied she Back fires and cuts. I have hooked up my timing light and at idle the timing mark on the block aligns with a notch in the wheel to the inside of the pulley wheel.

Can anyone advise how to set the timing? Assuming this is why she is bogging.

Best wishes,

Stan

I can see lots of info on a distributer that requires a jumper but no info on mine. Can anyone assist with an instruction sheet to properly set the timing on this puppy. Desperate to get er out the hole :)

You have a Prestolite BID distributor. Nothing special to set timeing. Just hook up a timiing light and turn the distributor to adjust.

Most issues in here resolved, started a new thread on timing to get this set up.

Thanks for all the assistance so far, much appreciated.

Just checked out the pics, I would make sure that trailer is rated to hold that boat. Trailer looks way to small to be under that big of a boat. Huge safety issue if it is not.

Well spotted, that trailer has a date with the scrapyard. It's been replaced :)
