Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-E Timing Marks Missing?

Hello everyone. I went to verify the ignition timing on my 2004 Glastron GS249 with a 5.0 Volvo Penta GL-E (2 barrel) with the SX outdrive. It has the Delco EST distributor, so I purchased the correct shunt as per the Volvo service manual.

I fired up the engine and let it warm up to proper temperature. I then plugged in the shunt and connected it to battery positive.

When I connected my timing light and pointed it at the marks, I was surprised to discover the timing tab had no marks. The timing tab was a deep vee, while the balancer had the TDC line on it.

Am I missing something? Where are the timing marks? Maybe, thinking out loud here, they are on the balancer itself?

Please advise. Thanks!

What does the service manual say on how to set the timing.

Mine were very difficult to see on my Volvo 5.0 GL, but the marks were there...on the tab, very faint, and unlabeled. My 1999 service manual specified that each mark represented 2 degrees and that the deep V was zero. Your manual doesn't say something like this?

Of course this may be entirely useless information to you...please be aware that I do NOT know if that will hold true for your 2004, I am only familiar with my 1999.

Before doing the timing setting, I went down there with very strong flashlight and an awl, and had to create bright scratch marks in the correct location before using the actual gun. No way I could have ever seen the marks if I didn't highlight them first.

There is no timing tab with degree marks on your engine all you will have is the groove in the vibration dampner and a raised portion on your composit timing cover that has a groove for 0?. shown in picture below. You will need an advance timing light or a degree tape to time it correctly.

Also be aware that the timing procedure for EST is wrong in the manual.
Look at this thread for the proper procedure.

Thanks very much, Don. I will get the advance timing light. I did find your EST thread a few months ago, so I was aware of the incorrect factory manual procedure.

Thanks for all you do here, Don.
