Hi,
This is probably going to sound like a daft question but I'm hoping someone can help! I've purchased an Australian Mustang 2800 which has a 5.7gx (or gxi) Volve Penta Duo Prop. It's a 2003 build and its fuel injected and I know the leg is a duo prop but apart from that, I'm a little stuck on further info but I hope its sufficient!

I had the marine eleccy in there the other day to replace the batteries after diagnosing an electrical fault. I asked him to also fix the speedo which hasn't worked since I bought the boat 6 months ago. He phoned me to say there is an airline just coiled up in the engine bay - the speedo works as when air is blown up the line, speedo moves. However.... he's not sure where it connects. I spoke to a Volvo Penta mechanic who said there is no pitot tube or connection on the Volvo Pentas and that Mustang, the boat manufactuerer, would never have hooked it up. He said I'd have to have a 3rd party pitot or wheel fitted.

Strikes me as strange that in its time, it cost over $120k AUD and would have been sold new without the speedo working? There must be a hookup somewhere and I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.

(Please!!!!!!!!) HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Please!!!!)

Many thanks in advance.

Kind Regards,

David.

nope, no connection with volvo. its a hull manufacturing issue. someone forgot to install the pitot tube on the transom. they cost maybe 6 dollars and take 15 min or so to install.
you have to remember. volvo only manufactured the propulsion unit and possibly the guage package but usually not.
the rest came from various manufactuers and was all installed by the boat builder or the hull dealership.
its why sometimes this stuff gets so messed up.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies - I read in a few articles about built in pitot tubes in the legs - is this only applicable to newer legs?

Kind Regards,

David.

Only Mercruiser . . . they have pretty much always had a pitot built into the "leg" . . . This is definitely a manufacturer/dealer issue. Are they around? Good on ya mate, where you from?

Even newer Volvo sterndrives. I was disappointed too when I saw the skag sender thing protruding behind the hull. They have been around for far to long.

The builder is still around (only just!) - Mustang Marine (Gold Coast, Queensland - Australia) went into receivership late last year but they've now been bailed out, by an SA Bank I believe. I think I'll throw an aftermarket pitot on as per previous replies - it's not that I'm wanting it for accuracy - it's just annoying to have one of two large gauges on your dash dead as a doorknob! I've been using the GPS for speed readouts.

Still beggers belief that it appears to be a common practice! As for location of the pitot, does it have to be submersed in the water or just touching the water?

Submersed. The pitot, is usually kinda hinge mounted and sticks below the edge of the transom. Needs clean water to work properly.

On the starboard side I've got a transducer for the GPS (Garmin GPSMap 525s combo unit) so am I best off mounting the pitot on the port side in a similar height to the transducer? Sorry if these sound like daft questions but want to make 100% sure I'm on the same page before drilling any holes!!

Since you already have the GPS telling you your real speed I wouldn't bother drilling more holes to install this. I would buy a digital speed gauge compatible with your Garmin (lots out there) to replace your current analog one. That would be sweet setup and cheap too.

I hear what you're saying about the GPS but it's not about the accuracy - its just the fact that it's a large dead gauge staring at me!! The Tacho and the Speedo are the two largest gauges and if I replaced the speedo, I'd have to replace the Tacho as well. These gauges are larger than the standard VDO type gauges for the oil, trim fuel etc....

I've pasted a link below of the existing gauges. (not sure if I can paste images into the forum)

But that what I'm saying. You can replace your large speed analog gauge for a nice large digital speed gauge. Easy to install since your gps is right there on your console.

Edit: I'm having a hard time finding you a picture of what I mean. Which mean they are not as popular in the shops as I thought. Not sure why as lots of us have gps in our boats...

And as mentioned earlier - no new holes in the transom.

I think I know what you mean - from memory, the Mercury Smartcraft gauges were available in analogue or digital. On my last boat I had the analogue gauges but linked my Navman to the Smartcraft so swapping to digital didn't worry me.

Back to the search engine for me! (plus visiting the local boating establishments !!)

Garmin just came out with a new line of toys. One of them is this:

You could remove your speedo and place this in between?
