I have a 2000 DP-S. Book says use VP gear oil (of course). If not available, use Mobile 1 synthetic 75w90 GL-5. Is it safe to assume that's all the VP oil is at double the price?? I just want to know from a tech who services these drives. I am an auto tech. We have Pennzoil oil of the same spec as the Mobile I just mentioned. I can buy this in bulk at bulk prices and I have it within an arms reach of my work bay. From what I read in the VP manual, the Pennzoil is the same oil. Can anyone that is qualified and really knows give me an honest answer? Thanks in advance!

If its GL-5 synthetic it will be fine. I use the Mobil 1 in mine.

GL5 stands for Gear Lube grade 5 which is a 75/90. You can get it 2 ways synthetic or mineral.
Volvo says use GL5 Synthetic. They also sell their lable of GL5 Synthetic.

Is there any real reason to use synthetic over mineral? they both have the same lubricating specs. Just curious. Thanks

Anyone have a good explanation why you must run synthetic in the Volvo drives? What is the main difference between the two types of GL-5 lube, other than one is syn and one is petroleum based? Curiosity killing me....
