I have never used Volvo gasket sealer, but I have used a lot of OMC/BRP gasket sealant and Mercury’s perfect seal. I’ve been forced to use Permatex #3 when doing field service a few times.
The Permatex is better than nothing but nowhere as good as the BRP and Mercury stuff. I do think they are worth twice the price.

Pro tip; before you use the good stuff, stir it up with a screwdriver. The solids that make it seal better like to settle to the bottom. If it gets too thick, just add a little alcohol.

Agreed with Muc I’ve used Aviation as a substitute but I prefer the Evinrude gasket sealer. I went thru many of those little 4 oz bottles and finally bit the bullet and got the big one (16 oz) because it works so well. That stuff is supposed to be the same as Merc perfect seal. That and the Evinrude triple guard grease are the 2 things I use most in a salt water environment.

3M 4200 or 5200 is what you use to seal rub-rails or thru-hulls. it is not what you use to seal an outdrive.

No No No. that’s good stuff for it’s intended use, but it’s not for bellows
Take Lou C advice and get the BRP sealant in the small can.

???Bellows adhesive is essentially contact cement. I've used both Merc and Sierra brands. I'm sure VP has their own P/N...for contact cement. I believe it was Scott who turned me on to 3M black weatherstrip adhesive. Also contact cement, and it cured a recurring exhaust bellows slip-off problem.

Whichever brand you use it is critical that you remove all old sealant from the hubs, apply a thin coat to both hubs and inside the bellows, and let it tack up before pushing on the bellows

different manufacturers recommend different things, for sure OMC recommended their gasket sealer, for the gimble end of the bellows, and since the Volvo SX bellows (when it was all rubber) was exactly the same (same OE part number and all) as the OMC Cobra bellows, I'm sure you can use it. Just make sure that the ridge in the bellows inner sealing area, fits into that groove in the gimble flange...

Yup, that’s the right product.
I understand your scavenger hunt comment. For over 30 years I worked for boat dealers and took all these specialty items for granted. Had no idea how much they cost and how hard they were to get Now that I’m pretty much retired and only work on boats for fun I find out how hard to get and how expensive some of this stuff is. And when a dealer wants to order some of these things, minimum order is 6-12.

On the other end (pivot housing) were it just pops into the housing, I used OMC triple guard grease on both sides, esp on the inner surface where the bearing retainer presses into the bellows as you tighten the 6 nuts. I have not had trouble getting them to seal doing it this way.

try Amazon...I got a great price on the king size 16 oz can, you just have to look around...also got my triple guard grease too that way.

That is the correct product for glueing in the water passage o-ring. Also can be used for MerCruiser bellows. I’ve also seen a lot of co-workers use it for Volvo bellows without a problem.

I have Purchased the BRP product. Seems there's a ton of choices out there that do the same thing. This one may be best? Personal Opinions will probably vary - but seems like a solid choice.
