Volvo SX drive noise

Hi,

I have a 2008 Volvo 3.0 GLM / SX drive which has a drive noise when the steering is turned to port, and the engine revs are at 2000. The noise only occurs when the drive is in neutral, and is very similar to gimbal bearing noise.
There is also a gear whine noise at exactly the same revs as the knocking noise when under way so was wondering whether the two noises are related.

The engine /drive is still under an extended waranty, and so far the dealer has checked the alignment, changed the gimbal bearing, u-joints, and the input bearing in the top of the drive housing.

Has anyone on the forum experienced this problem with the new style SX drive or have a solution for this problem.

I have been told by other engineers that it cold be a problem with the power steering ram, but the dealer does not believe there is a problem with the steering.

Have your dealer check service bulletin 21-6-43. There was a problem with a possible loose coupler on the 3.0L engines between serial numbers 4012230287 ? 4012233123.
Could very well cause a noise.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

The serial number is 4012212247.

Its close to your serial numbers but not within the range.

First of all, don't rev your engine in neutral.
That said, I am curious...
The dealership checked and/or replaced all of these things, and gave your boat back to you even though the noise was still present? Did they explain why they did that?
Don't keep taking it to a dealership that can't figure it out. Take it somewhere else, even if it means hauling it out of town. Just because you bought the boat there doesn't mean you have have it serviced or repaired there.
I am with Don with the knocking noise when turned. It's either a loose or damaged coupler, engine way out of alignment, or bad U-joints.

Re: Volvo SX drive noise

I am agreed on the loose drive coupler bolts, and will advise the dealer to remove the engine and check the bolts.

As the noise only occurs when the engine has zero load on it, and stops when in gear underway it does seem to be the problem.
