Didn't have much luck with answers with my last post, but I arrive here again, distraught and angry. I put my drive back together today, went to put my prop nut on, and it stripped out, brass shavings falling everywhere. Maybe cause it's old? I dunno. Here's my problem: what size is this nut? I'd like to go buy one at a local lumberyard or auto parts store (preferably in stainless steel) but I have no clue as to the thread size. Any help?

I must also add, I still have that rough spot in my RPMs (about 2500 RPM). Here's the video again if anyone wants to maybe reply to this thread with a clue: http://youtu.be/lAQS0XEuB0Y

Those prop nuts are 1 1/16".

This is true. That is the O.D. and wrench size. I need the size of the thread... It LOOKS like a 3/4-16 but I don't know for sure. I need to Chase the threads on the shaft so I can put a nut on.

Ayuh,.... You got it,... 3/4"....

Don't use SSteel, it'll gall the threads, 'n rip 'em right off the shaft...

Use Brass....

You must have cross threaded it, or the threads were Bad before ya started....

Appreciate it Bondo. Will be sure it gets a brass nut when I can find one. To answer your wondering, there was a burr on the very first thread, and stripped the nut. It's all cleaned up now, just gotta find that brass nut.

Ayuh,.... It's kinda a Marine Nut,.... 3/4" brass ny-lock nuts don't have many Other applications....

Not sayin' thay can't be found in a commercial Bolt Store,...
Just don't be surprised by a "Nope"... at a hardware store...

Re: Volvo SX Prop Nut

Why don't you just go buy the correct part for your prop. It does not take a ny-lock nut like a Mercruiser, it takes a regular bronze nut with a retainer that has slots for a cotter pin. It's a lot cheaper to buy the right parts than to loose a prop.

Don, that would be very easy, IF... and only IF I didn't live roughly 3 hours from the nearest marina or boat parts store. I have, however, ordered Volvo Part # 3850984, just a few minutes ago.

Now that that's covered, anyone care to comment on the racket my engine is making in the video above? 3.0GSPHUB for reference

Are the belts tight? Is the noise coming from the alternator, circulation pump, raw water pump, or power steering pump?

Well, it sort of sounds as if its coming from the idler pulley. All of my belts are tight, was the first thing I checked. I don't know what it is, but it goes away once you pass roughly 2800-3000 RPM, it smooths out.

When was the last full tuneup, compression check, etc. Boat's don't run forever like cars are expected to do.

This is a fresh rebuild...... New rings, compression is good... Idles good.. is it possible that its cause its not under load? Or maybe idle mixture?

I would edit above but can't do so from my phone. A light bulb just went off. Don, or anyone for that matter, is it possible that the timing is off, causing my rough patch in RPM range? It's never been set with a light, only by ear (don't stone me!)

Yeah Yeah I guess I should have known.... I had a gut feeling, but I really didn't think that timing would cause an issue like that. Honestly, I figured if the timing was out, it wouldn't start, or would run really rough like a miss. Am I wrong in this line of thinking, as far as a rough run or a miss goes?

If you don't set your timing with a timing light, you might be buying a new engine again someday!

Buy a timing light!!!

Re: Volvo SX Prop Nut

If the engine is cold, it will run rough, also having the carb idle mixture adjustment out of adjustment will cause rough idle, vacuum leak will cause a rough idle, improper valve adjustment will cause a rough idle. Timing can also cause rough idle.
A rebuild isn't worth a damned if you don't get things adjusted right.

You also need to use the shunt to put the distributor into base timing mode in order to set the timing correctly. Read this on the proper way to set timing. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=271407

Will do Don, I have a shunt on the way as well. Hope to get this thing in the water this weekend if all goes well with the adjustments. I really appreciate the help you, and many other forum members, have given me in my short forum life.

Edit: I should also ask this as a preliminary before our shakedown cruise: what is normal running temp on this engine? I've run it at idle on muffs to get it to what I think is "operating temperature" for a total of 1.2 hours since rebuild (never for more than 10-15 mins @ a time), but my temp gauge reads no more than 135-140 range. I know I'm in danger over ~180, but is 140 a good running temp? I also do realize these gauges are not as accurate as a thermometer, but, it is still a ballpark figure.
