Hello,

I am new to the boating community, this is my second boat ever. It is a 1976 tri-hull with a ford waukesha 302 and a VolvoPenta 280 outdrive. To make a long story short, when I bought it for $550.00, I had no idea what I was in for, since falling in love with this little classic, I have spent most the year and most of my extra cash on restoring this boat. Engine is up to par, however it is the outdrive I have questions about, I pulled the dipstick and the oil was milky white, now its only fair I give you a short history, originally this boat had a 270, all bearings shot, coupler/bellhousing all trash, after the engine was rebuilt, I purchased a used 280 from a friend who owed me some cash, now this drive had been sitting for some time ( uncertain ammount ) before I had ti put on the engine, knowing this, the outdrive oil was fine when it was installed back in early August. This is a great outdrive, more than handles this little v8 I have. I had new bellows installed at that time as-well. Again I am new to all of this, but I am quick learner says my gpa :). Durring this restore process I have learned quite a bit about my boat, never the less I wnat to learn more. So far I do my own oil changes and winterizing, tune ups, and am currently in the middle of redoing all the electrical new, incuding guages. My younger brother does fiberglass work, so that comes in real handy, lol and I have what I call a super electrican handeling the electrical. Outdrive help please, where do I start to check my seals and make sure no more water gets inside. In the meanwhile I drained the nasty milky white oil and replaced it with new 10-30w same as engine. So please if anyone could direct me from this point I would be forever grateful.

Thank you in Advance.

Drain the oil back out, then do a pressure check of the drive with about 15 psi of air. If that doesn't show anything, do a vacuum check.
Before you do either, check to make sure there isn't any water in the bellows.

Now should I take it to a shop for these tests? Are these tools I can purchase for further maintenence in the future? Are they expensive? Also what happens if it happens to fail any of these tests?

Welcome fellow VP owner.

You better posts some pics of what you have. Just so we con have a look at a classic.:)

Aq190 I believe. Cool.

The pressure check will hopefully hiss air and show you were its leaking. You can buy the tool for 30 buck or so on ebay. You said you replaced the bellows, how were the ujoints in the new drive?

How much water? Did you check that the orings were in place on the drain and dipstick?

Like Don said, if its not a missing oring, pressure test should be next step.

Let us know what happens.;)

Pic's, no problem, however these are not updated w/ new outdrive. The pictures I have right now are from the beginning shortly after I had purchased it. Next week at some point Ill snap some new ones. The u-joints were mint, turned freely with ease and well greased. Looked new to me. What is the name of the tool?

From the picture on the right, it looks like a 270 outdrive, and not a 280, and the linkage cover is missing off the back of the drive.
Here is a a pic from a newer manual for pressure and vacuum testing the drive.

Yes all that is correct. However these pictures are before the new outdrive ( 280 w/ cover :) ). This was even prior to the engine rebuild. ( block and heads magnifluxed, --spelling on that, it was bored 10 over , new 4 barrel edelbrock intake installed, as the old one 2 barrel had a hole on the underside about the size of a fifty-cent peice. Anyhow originally it had a 270 painted black very ugly. Thank god it no longer looks like this, as the new 280 has not been painted original white and has a nice cover on it. I will upload new pictures next week sometime.

Do you have OEM service manuals for your engine and drive? If not, I have links to them.
You can also download the owners manual for your engine from the Volvo site.

No I do not. thank you, I glanced at the hommade tool for pressure testing, I do not know if I am capable of that, if I were taking it to a shop, do you have any idea on what the cost may be?

Also if you cold forward those links would be much appreciated. Also I am going to be reupholstering the side panels and the engine cover, any suggestions on what I should use? I am currently looking into replacemnet guages as-well, the ones I have now are weathered and some like fuel do not function at all, any help with those would be great too.

This is a link Cheifalan posted a while back, seems to still work. Guys got the pressure tester you need. Have a look.

Call around for the cost to have someone test it for you. Probably a good idea to find someone who works on the old Volvos in your area anyway.

There was a guy who had a set of manifolds for your motor here a while back, I think it was Ziggy. You may want to PM him and see if he's still got them. Those old 302's/351's were only used for two years or so and you'll have trouble finding some of the parts should you need them in the future. Just a thought:)

Did you confirm the orings were on the drain plug and dip stick? did you change them when you replaced the drive?

You may want to post the interior and guage questions in the Restoration forum. They are a helpful bunch.

This is a link to the volvopenta website engine info. type in your engine info and look for your motor aq190.

Don will have to get you the service manuals.

Your engine looks very nice. Have you had it out running? Up to temp? No problems?

Since the original style are NLA from Volvo or any aftermarket manufacturers, I would guess he found some that would fit and adapted them to the Y pipe.

Here is one for the engine also, doesn't look like you need it but here it is anyway.

Re: VolvoPenta 280..Pls Help!

Those were the manifolds that were on it when I purchased it. I thought they were original. they match up perfect. I believe someone from our local CL also posted manifolds, think he was only asking $50 or so. I am kinda bummed I really want to go take new pics w/ all the new changes. Does not even look the same. gonna go to ebay have a glance @ that tool. Thank you guys so much for all your insight. For a first time poster, long time reader, I have been impressed. Some things you and Don mention, I am not sure if I am saavy enough to handle yet, but it gives me a glimpse at my future lol. I really do love this boat, right now today I have probally invested 6k, on top of the original $550 I paid for it, I just want to bring her back back to showroom or as close as I can.

I just have to say, I know its all about staying original, and I have tried to keep that theme for the most part, but I have to be honest, the original manifolds do not look near as nice as the ones that are on there now, it is the whole round look , I have to say I think mine look better, and kinda unique!!

Re: VolvoPenta 280..Pls Help!

Will that pressure tester work for me? It states they are made for merc, omc, I am guessing it is universal, am I correct? 32 bones not bad, if that will work for me then I am golden, also I found a gentleman who will test and seal the drive, he gave me a quote for $200 plus the cost of seals. Does that sound fair? I have no clue as to how much a job like this should cost.

Re: VolvoPenta 280..Pls Help!

Yes they are reputable here in Las Vegas, and I had them do work for me last summer. Alot has to do with the economy I believe as last summer to get my older 270 sealed was $500.00 at most places, that may be due to season time and the economy. But who knows. After the seal kit it and stuff it probably will total out aroound $300 or maybe a little more, even that is better than $500.

Re: VolvoPenta 280..Pls Help!

Awesome links, Thank you again. I am going to take it the pro's, try and get a gander at what the testing process is like, and purchase that tool for the next time, I am a visiual learner, so if I see them once I can take that home, and use that tool for the next round. Also I was thinking of replacing and upgrading my throttle/shifter controls, I have all new cables, but have no clue where to get controls any ideas?
