I brought the Vortec to life today.

After some smoke....it smoothed-out nicely.

When I started it in the fall I noticed a strange noise coming from the rear of the engine.
The outdrive wasn't installed at the time.
Heard the same noise today......almose seemed to be external to the engine.

Is it possible the coupler is making this noise?

It's not present all the time.

Only if you left the bolts loose. Without the drive, nothing contacts the coupler...... Unless you got your shift cable up againt it.
If it's a clicking sound, did you check the exhaust shutters while you had it all apart?

Hi Don....

Yes, checked the exhaust shutters. When I say I checked them I mean I verified they were there. Is it possible they are making this noise?

Bolts are defintly tight.

Shift cable? How can that contact the coupler? Can I check for that with the engine installed?

It could be routed wrong and just pushed up against the coupler. Just run your hand down the cable and see if it contacts the coupler along the way. (Engine off of course)

Yea, from the top. Start at the top of the cable, should go down to the transom shield just above the exhaust Y.
It will shift ok, until the coupler rubs through the cable, IF that's the problem.

Is it possible it's the exhaust shutters?

I'm wondering if it's the shutters "flapping" back and forth..........

Will check the cable tomorrow.......

Thanks for the tip Don.

Anything is possible, but without hearing it, it's really hard to say. Do you have a mechanics stethascope (sp) you could listen to where the noise is comming from,
When you had it apart, what did they look like. The old style (stainless with rubber edges) would make noise if the rubber was burned off. The new style won't make noise.

Come on Tony, you're reading way too much into this stethescope and hose thing. The Steth-a-whatever..... costs about 10 bucks at NAPA. Any hose or even a long screwdriver or broomstick will do the same thing. Just hold one end to your ear and the other to where the noise is coming from. The place where the noise is the loudest is the likely cause of the problem.

Tony, glad to see you got it fired up. I can't help you much with the noise, only to say I didn't have any while running my engine yesterday. Hopefully, it is just the shutters. Should be easy to id with the stethoscope. Good Luck.

Re: Vortec is Awake

Checked the shift cable today.....seems to be clear of the coupler.

I'm betting the noise is the shutters.... :)

Will be in the water next w/e.

Should I really be looking for 5000RPM's?

I planned on moving up to a 17" prop.

Will be happy to see 4400.....

Isn't this SBC rated for 4400-4800?

And yes.........if it doesn't go above 3500.....I will put a hole in the hull!
