hey all. i pulled the upper gear housing on a volvo penta 280 and the spline splice (outdrive coupler) fell out before i could take note of it. seems like the little circular pin that keeps the two splines separate isn't exactly in the middle of the coupling (ie it's slightly taller in one orientation than the other). does is there an "up" or "down" when re-installing?

also, whomever worked on this prior had used gasket maker to mate the upper gear housing from the lower unit. my understanding is that i shouldn't do that when re-installing? even though the two surfaces are rougher than i'd like them to be?

The upper gear housing to the center section is sealed with “O” rings. There is also should be a shim in the bearing cavity. I cannot remember which way the sleeve goes but maybe the short side faces up.

I posted in your other thread. The manual states to use permatex #3 on the mating surfaces along with the seal and proper shims. Fyi permatex #3 is their aviation cement.
