changed my outdrive oil on my 1988 aq211 with 290 outdrive, and i lifted it up and noticed a hydrolic cylinder inside housing, does this have a hydrolic tilt and can i use it when underway to trim boat? also there is a pump with seloniods mounted to the transom, also when tilted up the outdrive drops on its own, takes about an hour but what could be causing this, i have checked for leaks but cant find anything wet. i checked the manuel and they only talk about an electric tilt that cannot be used when underway, can someone explain this setup?

Re: vp290 trim/tilt question

Yes, the 290 has hydraulic trim. Usually when the drives drop, it's due to the pump itself failing. It is possible for a cylinder to bad internally, but I have never seen it or heard of it.

Go to the link below and plug in aq211a in the Engine Type box and download an owners manual, explains how it works.

Re: vp290 trim/tilt question

thanks dons i have that manual downloaded already but it tells me nothing about this trim/tilt system except a wiring diagram and that it a prestolite digital trim with square display. thats why i asking these questions here unless i am missing something in the manual, does not tell me if it can be used as trim when underway,

Look at manual page 5, items 12 & 13. I thought it explained the trim nicely.

Re: vp290 trim/tilt question

thanks dons all this time i thought this drive could only be run in full down position only and raised for idleing only, i cant wait to try and trim while underway, makes sense that the aq211a was designed for torque not speed and good fuel economy and installed in my steigercraft being a commercial boat, one more question,do i get this pump rebuilt or buy a new one if soo i cant find a part # for the pump
