VRO rebuild or replace?

Hi guys,Im just in the process of a 89 225hp rebuild,I have had no problem with the VRO so far but im figuring that it is the original so Im thinking if Im going to the trouble of a rebuild I should do something about the VRO.I have found these kits online.ALL VRO PUMPS<br />FUEL PISTON AND DIAPHRAGM KIT,ALL VRO PUMPS<br />AIRMOTOR REPAIR KIT.My question is by replacing these does it effectively give you a new VRO system or is it better for piece of mind to replace the whole unit??

fitzms,<br />I would reccomend replacing the pump as a unit.<br />I recently have done a rebuild of my vro/oms fuel pump.I used both kits(air motor/fuel pump)you describe with no success.There are very small check valves in the pump which are non-servicable.<br />They wear out and can be damaged if your not using the up-to-date Blue pulse limiter.I would believe the rebuild kits to be good for functioning pumps as preventive maintence or to remedy an obvious worn out diaphram(such as a tear/hole).If you want to service a malfuntioning pump,replace it.This was my $37 lesson.

Good advice Reel thanks,Do know you of any good online suppliers of the pumps as all things outboard here in Australia are very expensive.i have seen them for approx $250US, is this about as cheep as you get them over there? Go the Islanders in 2004/05

Thats about right.I purchased a new one today for about $290 w/tax from Johnson dealer.Mastertech site has them for $255(without shipping).I saw a new one on Ebay go for $180 for which I'am kicking myself that I passed up the "buy it now",lol.Only thing there is your kind of gambling with what you get.There is also a pump available which does not pump oil if you don't mind pre-mixing.OMS/VRO pump replacement for 3 wire harness(#5004559).This and (#5004558)are identical pumps except the prior(59)includes a 3-wire adaptor harness and other harware.I believe (5004559)is the one you want.Good luck.<br />Link:http://www.maxrules.com/fixomcvro.html <br />Just a footnote:I mention "VRO" pump in my reply.Actually the "NEW" pumps are not VRO pumps at all.They are called OMS(Oil metering system)pumps.Vro means(Variable Ratio Oiling).The new OMS pumps do not pump oil at a variable ratio but rather at a constant 50:1 ratio,I think.
