I got my hands on a wagner wide shot 2 speed paint sprayer. It is well used and I don't know if it even works. It makes a loud noise when I turn it on.

My question for the experts here, I am using a semi gloss latex interior house paint. If I use this paint sprayer for that, do I need to thin the paint? If so what do I use and what mix rate should I use to thin the paint for this sprayer?

DD. yes you need to thin the paint out a lot to use that machine. Use water. Make sure you mix it thouroughly and pour the paint into your sprayer through a strainer. You can get disposible ones from the Home Depot. You can try mixing a pint of water into a gallon of paint, but you may need to add as much as a quart to keep it from clogging. It depends on the paint. Obviously it will take more than one coat. Good luck.

Forget it DD. Those things are a joke in my experience. The advertisements show fences and houses being rapidly painted with those things but they do not work with latex.

And you cannot thin latex enough to make them work, or should I say, if you do, you'll ruin the paint.(I think 5 or 10% is max for latex, even then you should use a product called Floetrol, not just water.

Yes they do make a horrible noise when they run. The have a little diaphram that pushes the paint.

I had a 2650 psi Cambell/Hausfeld airless that would even continually clog up with latex. I sold it and finally bought a 1000$ Graco Airless to be able to effectively spray latex. It was one model up from the one in this link, although this one would work well too. Link

DD - i have the same sprayer and along with thinning the paint you can get larger orfices for use with different kinds of paint. If you unscrew the end of the sprayer there will be small spring with the orfice on the end of it, easy to change.

what are you painting?

I painted the exterior of my house with one.....twice. They work with latex, not like an airless, but it'll do the job. I had a little stick with a slit in it to judge the thinning. I didn't have to thin it THAT much.

On the one I used, they supplied a viscosity cup. Dip the cup in the paint, time how long it took to fully drain. Thin as necessary to drain cup in 1 minute.
