Waking up a J100STLESB Issues

I bought a 19' Sea Nymph GLS last year that had not been used in a year, so probably two years since it ran. Just getting this one going again may take some time. I rebuilt the carbs very carefully. Each passage was checked for flow as it went back together. I installed a fuel water separator and new fuel lines from the tank back to the engine. It took a lot of priming to get it to fire the first time. I had muffs and water hooked up and when it finally started idling (idles for about 6 or 7 seconds and dies with a jerk) I noticed there was no discharge from the tell tale. I believe this engine should have water discharging at idle, is this correct?

Perhaps, but not if it only runs for 6 or 7 seconds?

Yes. The telltale is plumbed right at the start of the cooling system at the powerhead. As soon as water pumps up from the lower unit, the telltale should start to flow. Does not need to fill the powerhead in order for the telltale to work. It will take maybe 10-20 seconds for it to activate when the engine is started cold. Regarding the engine dying with a "jerk": The engine will run lean when first started cold, so you may need to re-activate the choke for a few seconds (maybe every 15 seconds) as the engine is running-for the first minute or so-till the powerhead warms up and can run without any choke. If the engine is new to you and there is no maint history on that engine, it's always best to replace the water pump impeller as a precaution. A recommended normal maintenance procedure anyway. That way you know it's ok for future trips. No need to get out on the water and have the engine overheat first time out.

Thank you for the responses. I will be pulling the lower unit here in the next couple of days (I have a pump rebuild kit on the way) and come back to this thread with more updates on the water issues. I was thinking that with the constant pressure from the garden hose at 60 psi that water would be trying to flow through the block as soon as it started.

Does anyone have a flow diagram or an explanation of the water flow pattern through the block.

Water will NOT flow out of the tell tale right away from just the hose pressure !----The vanes of the impeller block most of the flow of water.----------Impeller must be turning to allow water to go through the pump.

I finally got the new water pump kit installed. It appears that the impeller had previously been done as it had no perceptible wear but had taken a definite set. Got it all put back together and started it on the muffs. Joy, good stream from the tell tale. Head temps between 120 to 130 degrees after 5 minutes.
