Want To Buy Steering - ? - WHAT to buy

Good Morning out there,

I am working on a 16' 1960 or 1961 Red Fish. It had the old pully system for steering and I ditched it in favor of a new one.

Everyone has probably seen that the Teleflex is the prominent product available. I noticed they are between $100 and $200 for most and it APPEARS that they come with cable, correct. I noticed the cables are about $100 for just the cable so I sure hope the systems come with cables... anyone know for sure?

Also anyone have a recommendation on where to buy (best price and knowledgeable customer response)? Also I gather that I need to measure... alot of the systems appear to have a specific size cable (yet some have a cable that is for example 10-20 feet they say)... any ideas which to buy?

Also on my boat, the pully system I had was a dual cable system yet most of the systems look like a single cable... is this sufficient?

Also I seen that handy measuring page here on iboats (http://www.iboats.com/basics/measure_steering_cables.html)
and that looks like all the info I will need on that, agreed?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks!

You can't go wrong with a Teleflex steering system. That said, it depends on what package you are buying if a cable is included or not. iboats is fairly clear on which packages include a cable.

Also, your old system used two wires, the new system will use one thick cable about as fat as your pointing finger. Very tough.

Which brings up a very important issue: What year/model engine do you have? If your motor has a "through tube" (where the end of the cable passes through) built in, then you just need to add the steering link to the steering system and you are set. If the motor does not have a "through tube" then you need to add a package for pre-cable steering systems that lets you adapt a new steering system to an old motor.

Lots of info on this on the forum. Do a few searches to find older posts regarding this specific condition.

If you want the lowest price, as you mention, then shop around, prices on Teleflex steering systems vary a lot. When you do a search, put in "teleflex " and the steering part number. You should find some discount suppliers with low shipping prices.

Thanks for reply Mark,

I have a 1962 Evinrude 40hp (M#35530) to be installed on it. It originally had some sort of bracket that the pulleys hooked to on the front "handle". I would say no on the through tube then.

Then you will need this part in addition to the steering kit, and steering linkage:

It lets you mount the steering cable to the transom in place of a through tube on the motor. It has a ball joint mount, so the cable can move to match the engine's arc as it turns. Also allows the motor to be tilted up without binding.

Like I mentioned before, do some searches and you will find examples of other members using this same hardware.

Holy cow thanks Mar, I would have never ordered that... I just figured I could lay it there along witht he shift cables (hope I don't need one with shift cables too).

Hmmm, I expect I will have to mount this AND the steering system BEFORE I reinstall the top half of the boat back on the hull... it would be difficult to mount the recommended bracket to the transom otherwise because the splashwell would be in the way. So no ther brackets needed along the way then (from front to rear) other than this bracket?

What is that bracket called?

Thanks for the info MArk, much appreciated.

Its meant to be mounted on top, after you install the cap. Have seen it mounted on the transom, and in the splashwell.

Call Teleflex and they should be able to give you the exact name. I just can't think of it off hand.
