Ok to start things off 1965 40hp Evinrude outboard motor (?big twin or lark??) i don't know.
It is set up as i bought it to accept controls it has no tiller handle on it. I will attach pictures as soon.
There is a group of wires coming from motor which contains a positive and negative for battery hook up for starter. Then with in the group of wires is a cluster of wires going to a plastic clip that goes into maybe a boats' hook up i don't know?
Is there anyway that the wires that go to the clip is for a ingnition switch?? As i look over the motor itself i find that their is no ON/OFF switch or starter button to engage the starter or anything all the controls look like there contained in the wires going to the clip. Any information would help me out. If its possible i want to switch out the controls for the tiller style.

Well first off we need to know if you have a Big Twin or a Lark. You can put a tiller handle on a Big Twin, but not a Lark. At least not without a lot of work and parts. Come back with a model number or picture.

As for the wires, yes all that stuff does go to the junction box in the boat, which must be missing in your case (??). From there, another cable goes forward to a key / ignition / start switch.

OK, with that, we know you have a 1965 Big Twin Electric. It should have an "emergency" throttle control where the tiller normally would be attached. You would remove items 67 and 68 and install the steering handle kit. Pictures attached. BTW, these are for the 1963 because I don't have the 1965 book. But should be the same thing.

As for the wires, you are missing the junction box assembly. Also attached. But you can Gerry rig up something there.

so should i just make or get a female junction box? I am unfamiliar with the way its set up as it is now (set up for controls).
i would rather have just the battery wires by themself/ and all the other wires just on the motor going to the "on/off", choke, etc. is there such a thing or am i'm lost on this??

in the picture above the one where i sliced open the wire shroud - showing the battery wires and all the smaller guage wires. The smaller guage wires i want to eleminate from the shroud. is that possible or do i need a junction box that will accept the hook up in the group of wires in the shroud??

Re: Want to convert a controled steering outboard to a Tiller style operation?????

I never owned/used a motor with controls and thats why i'm pretty confused on how i would get this motor to start let alone run with the way it sits.
I have the motor on a stand, and the cable controls have been removed and the wire clusters in the shroud were left.
Question: what would the male end of wires go into- the junction box?? right?-- do i need the junction box to operate the on/off, choke? must be cause there is no other buttons, switches on the motor itself.

This is not the correct wiring diagram for your motor, but I selected it to show you the minimum stuff required to make it work. The actual physical layout isn't important and you can put the components wherever you want. Just so it is all connected correctly.
