hey guys i boaght a bayliner with a 85 hp force its a 1989 model. The tilt and trim is shot it looks like someone took a hammer to it trying to get the motor to came down the fitting is broke off in tilt cylinder the trim cylinder is destroied and the pump is gone. i made a make shift pin and put it in water to try engine out yesterday to be sure everything is ok before i spend a lot of monet on it.It runs great and love the boat(bayliner center console) anyway is it a big deal to convert it over to manual trim, to save me a little money. Or do i have to change the whole transome bracket. If so i could not find anything on ebay. Or Was this engine even made with manual trim Thanks in advance

Re: wanting to swap power trim for manual trim

Most were made with power trim but some (a lot) came without trim. Simply remove the trim/tilt unit and insert a 1/2 stainless bar in one of the four transom bracket holes. If the trim unit is so badly corroded that you can not get it out, a full bar will not pass through both clamps so use a couple of 1/2 inch stainless bolts

Re: wanting to swap power trim for manual trim

ive already removed the trim unit thats what i done yesterday to do lake test was put two bolts in each side but it bent the bolts pretty bad i guess i could get harder bolts. But i noticed the holes in the engine was smaller than the holes in the transome clamp. You think it would break the transome clamp (the larger holes) if the rod was a bit too small for the hole. It has to go through the engine side also to hold it down in reverse?

Re: wanting to swap power trim for manual trim

The reverse lock uses a 3/8 pin that goes through the yoke and clamps over the 1/2 inch bar. The flat tabs on the yoke contact the 1/2 inch bar. There are (4) 1/2 inch holes in the transom clamps and this is where the bar passes. Nothing goes in the big holes that held the mounting bar for the tilt/trim cylinders.

You need to find a reverse lock lever that goes in a plugged hole in the yoke just under to steering snout. You need a plastic cam and steel rod that goes down to the lock plate. You need a bent locking plate, two springs, and the 3/8 mounting rod. If I can get to it tomorrow I will post a couple of photos.

Re: wanting to swap power trim for manual trim

yes please pictures would be great ive been looking for a diagram with no luck i should have been more clear about the large holes, i was referring to the four in the clamp , the smaller holes are on the swivel section of engine. So these are where the reverse lock goes? so in forward gear the engine would just push anainst the pin? so i need pieces to lock the motor for reverse? Ive almost confused myself with this reply If you could send pictures ,that would help a lot thanks.

Photo with the stick shows the lock plate and pivot bar. Stick is there because I was too lazy to find the 1/2 inch bar. Next photo shows the lever, actuating cam and connecting rod. Last photo shows the hand lever under the steering snout.
