Hi.
A bit new to this boat fixing so sorry if this sounds stupid but I have found a buzzer in the throttle/control unit. Should this sound a test when I switch the key on not? What is it there for? The Engine is a 1979 Johnson 100HP
If the control that you have is from 1979, it probably does not have a self test on the horn. It also would not have a low oil warning, fuel restriction warning etc. because you would not have a VRO on a stock 1979 engine.
What you would have is a tan wire leading from the temperature switch in the powerhead to the horn in your control, so that you will know if your engine overheats to 211? F +/- 6?.
If you want to test the horn you will find a sleeve on the tan wire a few inches from the cylinder head which you can slide down to disconnect the wire. If you ground the control end to the block with the ignition key on, the horn should sound.
Some of the 80's controls have a slot above the ignition key under the vertical part of the warm-up lever. With the key in the run position, a second key inserted into that slot will test the horn.
