Does the other gentleman's vehicle pull it fine? I would also think a Ranger should have no issues with that size of a boat so perhaps try another vehicle to see if its the trailer. My S-10 had no troubles with a 18' Lonestar cabin cruiser... its probably the trailer. Also, is the engine firmly strapped down? If its swinging side to side that could cause part of the problem.

Were you towing it without the outboard? I'm no expert, but my Starchief tows way different without the outboard hanging off it. I'm guessing the increased tongue weight makes a bigger difference than you would think in handling. Just a thought.

I had the outboard in the bed, but you might be on to something there. could be weight distributing problem. Im not sure what to think. I have a old Bronco that would probably pull it better then the Ranger. Not sure really what to do here for the moment either way its no rush because its going in the shop anyways to stay dry. I may hook up to it and take it for a spin to see what it does.

Update: I just discovered the U bolt are missing on one side of the axle. Hmm I wonder if that might cause the problem.

You think? Fix that and give it a try. Something else is move the winch post around. You might have too much or too little tongue weight. Ranger should tow that with no probs.

Me thinks you will have to reset the trailer Axel to solve the problem. However the suggestion of moveing the boat back or forward on the traler,is a good one to try and easier to do.

I replaced the Ubolts on both sides of the axle as well as the leaf spring center bolts. Everything is all tight and greased so that should help matters. The side of the axle the ubolts were missing from was riding about 5 inches forward of center were it needed to be, so I imagine thats what was causing the extra drag and swaying.

That should be a major difference, then you can check the tongue weight after you try it out. Where the outboard was loaded would also affect tongue weight, so test it with the motor mounted. Good luck, glad you didn't have to give up on the deal!

We got nailed by snow yesterday so I cant take it for a spin down the road. I am going to focus on cleaning out the boat and get it all lined out for the motor mount. I should probably start a new thread about bringin this boat back to life. Thanks guys

Tongue weight needs to be 10%-15% of the total towing weight. The axle can be shifted to achieve this (I think someone suggested this). My Ranger 2.3 pulls a 14' boat that's fully loaded and I barley know the boat is there. I would think a 16' wouldn't be a problem to tow.

Now up the ramp might be a little dicey with a 4 banger. I need to clear the seaweed from the ramps in Lake St. Clair or my truck spins with the 12' Sea Scamp, or my buddies 14' Blue Fin. A steep ramp might be a problem for you, unless it's dry:D.

Edit: Tongue weight should be7-10%, not 10-15%. Sorry.

That is not a desirable Evinrude. It's super cool looking but it's electric shift, thirsty as heck, and may have some additional NLA parts. For Johnson/Evinrudes in the higher horsepower ranges, you really want '73 or newer.

your truck will tow it fine. i tow an 18' Starchief with my 4 cyl taco, even up and down the hills and canyons in New Mexico.

Does the Tacoma pull your boat up the ramp? How many horses or better yet foot pounds of torque does it have?

Re: Was offered a trade for my 67 Jet. Your thoughts?

hard to answer that since i haven;'t had the boat in the water yet  i did see some water splashing off it during the monsoon season but that's about the only splashing yet.

but given that it pulls it up mountains that rise >3-500' per mile (and starting at base elevation of 4000' so it's a little under sea-level power figures) and has 4WD for slippery-ramp traction, i'm not worried. it also pulls our 25' Macgregor sailboat just fine. both the hp and torque ft-lbs are abt 165 at sea level; this is the 2.7 liter engine, not the 2.4 that comes in the 2WD.
