1990 dt 40...sunk a year ago in salt water, buddy drained it got it going again(he said)then filled it with oil for the winter...lol...so i buy it from him this year; seized(thinking i could use the lower unit)...anyhow i come on to the puppy and it comes free...decide to put some fuel to it change the plugs..pull it three times and it starts up,since then put about 2 hours of running time on it;runs perfect.
I guess my question is do you think the rings where stuck or the main bearing?
I think ill just keep on running it because I am not a mechanic and to take it apart and replace stuff would probably cost more than its worth.
I hope this is not another stuipd question but being a 2 stroke theres no oil filter or engine(base) oil drain right:confused:?was kinda looking to drain the oil to look for little metal peices...not gonna happen is it

Re: was seized

Well, if he didn't run the motor after it went under then it wouldn't have come free at all, it could have been just the last bit of salt that held the pistons a bit ..... as long as you run the motor 50:1 you will be fine .... no there is no oil filter or engine oil to drain, apart for the lower unit gear oil ..... but that hardly ever needs to be changed ......

Re: was seized

the lower unit seemed fine checked the oil, seemed ok but changed it anyways
i already have one dt40 just bought this one for the lower unit, thats why buddy let it go for 200 bucks cause he couldnt free it...155 pounds of pure untamed power and three or four swear words is all it took lol
just wondering if the main bearing does start to go if it would get noisy(louder)before it does?and at that point its to late isnt it

Re: was seized

well, when you say main bearing what are you meaning here, cause it seems what i am thinking of something you are not describing .... as long as you mix the fuel with outboard 2-stroke oil 50:1 then the motor should be fine ....

Re: was seized

It has bearings like every other engine, except they're roller bearings or needle bearings. If salt water got to them and rusted them, they would have "flat-spotted" when you started the engine, and you'd be hearing a howling noise. The 40 should just sit there and whir quietly and contentedly when everything's right in its world.
