Hello, I just change the water pump on my mercury cruiser outboard 40hp engine, now there is water driping and blowing out where the spark plugs are:(.

This seems to be a head gasket issue, does it sound like it? I hope I didnt warp the head!! What would be the signs of that ?

If its the head gasket, would that be why its so hard to start and idle?

Also, the fuel filter is old, would changing this help the boat start better?

I appreciate any feedback and help :D.

Thanks, Rob

Hello:

Your heading and beginning line in your post is a little confusing. Is it a Mercury Outboard 40hp, or a MerCruiser I/O? The two are nothing alike and the MerCruiser doesn't go down to a 40hp.

Thought you should know.

I haven't EVER heard of a "Mercury Cruiser" Where are you getting the "Cruiser" part? Does it say that on the cowling? 2-stroke or a 4-stroke?

I dont know why the hell I keep calling it a cruiser?! Its a 2 stroke mercury tracker outboard... That I know now!:D

Just changed the water pump, then replaced the head gasket cover, and that took care of the water by the plugs, changed the fuel filter since it was old, runs and sounds awesome when we throttle it up but it putters out when we idle it at 2 and 1rpms? Just dont get it?!

Any ideas? I We also have the motor submerged in a big barrell of water, we havent had it in gear, or had in running in gear on the water.

Thanks, Rob
