I put a impeller in my 1985 40elcob motor,When I started the motor today on muffs it pumped water great. When I turned everything off, water was leaking out of where the lower unit was split apart from the upper part of the motor. Is there suppose to be a new seal to be put in when it goes back together.

That is likely fine. My '98 Johnny has cast in slots at that joint to allow water to drain. If it really bothers you, look up your motor on the crowleymarine.com site parts listing and see if it has a gasket. If no gasket, leaking is fine.

I'm with Chris on this one. Just make sure you are getting enough cooling water through the powerhead.
