Trying to understand the water flow circuit in my motor/drive, I had the muffs hooked up to it yesterday and it didn't seem to be pumping water in/out. This unit has the closed glycol loop which is controlled thermostatically so I understand that side will flow when the thermostat sees 150-185 F I think but does the "raw" water system flow all of the time? Didn't seem like it ever pushed water through - not sure where the exit is for this circuit - are there any links that show this detail? Thanks.

Once you download the manual I posted a link to in your other post, you will have a diagram of cooling systems. Both of them.
The raw water side must flow all the time to keep the exhaust cool. Have you replace the raw water pump impeller? that is the first thing to do on any cooling system problem on any type engine and drive. Way to many things can take them out.

Thanks, I had no problems all summer with overheating so I assume the impeller is ok - I pulled it while winterizing yesterday and I didn't see any obvious defects - guy I bought the boat from said it was just replaced last year where he had it winterized - by the way - do I need to drain lake water from the glycol heat exchanger or will it drain from the oil cooler drain plug? Thanks.

Drain it like it says in the owners or service manual (check both). I haven't downloaded the owners manual, but they do usually tell you the process of draining the engine for best results.
