water flow problems

I have a 1986 70 hp evinrude and I am getting very little water at all out of the out of the little spout. I have a new impeller and housing in the lower unit. I have checked the house and the fitting from the hose to the motor and the spout. The motor does not run hot but when I took the fitting out of the motor, there was water but seamed like there should be more. Any ideas?

Re: water flow problems

did you run a wire, or weed eater line thru the hose. you could have also crimped the rubber bushing where water tube goes into the water pump, and restricting the water flow.

I didn't not crimp the tube going into the water pump but I think it has a seal. How do you crimp this tube it attaches to the motor?

Re: water flow problems

TD meant that you may have mistakingly restriced water flow at the impeller housing by having the water tube pressed into the grommet at the top of the housing, instead of having it smoothly slide into the grommet. This happens quite often, especially when trying to raise the lower unit by yourself.

Did you flush and backflush the water line while the lu was down to ensure adequate flow? Clean the water intake area of debris?

Re: water flow problems

When reinstalling a lower I always put a little grease on the grommet and the end of the tube, helps it slide in better.

And is this on a hose and muffs or in the water?

The pump isn't self priming so it needs to be fully submerged to pump correctly.

Re: water flow problems

I understand what he meant now, I will check that out. I had it in a tub of water and it had plenty of water. I combined two motors and made one. This is a problem I had with the power head before I combined them.
Thanks

Insure that you also have a new and operating T/stat assy installed as well.A removed one or one hung open can inhibit good flow from the tell/tale.

Also check head temp when running to help determine how much cooling you are actually getting where it matters.

Re: water flow problems

I have two identical motors save the shaft length.

Both have new pumps and t-stats.

Odd thing is one of them will pump fine with the flush ears and the other won't. but submerge the other and water spits out just fine....

And it's done that for years... never overheated, but have to flush it in a barrel.

And it's the long shaft that has to be submerged.... could be my water pressure isn't enough to push the water that high? Anyway like I said it's never run hot, the water flow is only warm to the touch and the stream is fine so long as the foot is submerged.
