Water Impeller?

I just started my boat for the first time this season, I hooked boat up to a motor flusher, started engine, and it isn't pulling water in. I didn't see water coming out the prop/exhaust, so I shut the engine down right away. What is the most likely problem, as this boat is coming out of winterization? Is my impeller shot? Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Water Impeller?

Try this: Check the water output for blockage. I've had insects get inside the hose and build nests.

Good idea, I will go check that now. I hope that is the problem!

when was the last time you checked/changed your impeller or checked for a clog?

Re: Water Impeller?

Impeller was replaced one year ago. Everything was in working order when I winterized the boat in October. I did notice a piece of wasp nesting in the propeller output. What areas do I need to check for pieces or nest/blockage? Do I need to disconnect any hoses? Pull the prop?

Thanks,

Its an Aplha One...260

Very little water exits the prop when you run an Alpha on the 'muffs'...almost all of the water exits around the transom through the idle relief port(s).

Happy boating!

If it was drained, it may take several seconds to draw water up and through the cooling system and start going out the exhaust. How long did you run it?

I ran it for 30-40 seconds, and I did that 3 times. Should I let it run longer?

yes. my thinking is IF there was a blockage before the water pump you already fried the impeller so that damage would be done. i DON'T think you did though. so start her up and WATCH your temp gauge and see whats what. and like Rock in warm florida said, check for water exiting around the transom.

Re: Water Impeller?

Thanks for info. I will give it a try again tomorrow. I was worried I was going to fry impeller, but maybe I just need to give it a few seconds...
If I do fry the impeller? Where do I find the instructions for replacing it on here?

Re: Water Impeller?

head on over to the Merc forum. check out the MUST HAVE Technical Information for DIYers sticky. scroll on down to number 9 and download the factory repair manuals for your engine and drive. while in that sticky read EVERYTHING you can. there is everything you ever wanted or needed to know all laid out nice like. :)

Re: Water Impeller?

I ran it for about 4 min. no water circ. watched temp gauge, temp. didn't go up. Was hesitant to run it much longer in case temp. Guage faulty, although it worked last Oct. I also didn't see water going out the transom end. I think I will replace the impeller and see what happens, that can't hurt right? Or is there something else I should try first?
