Water in fuel....

I don't think my motor has a water separator in the fuel line. Did these come from the factory with one already
installed or were they an after market purchase? I ask because after replacing a faulty coil, it started right away at
launch, but I had difficulty in starting again while anchored for about an hour or so. I know I had plenty of fuel but
took quite a bit of coaxing to get the motor to start again. It's an '89 470.
Please and thank you.

Not factory installed at that time (started about '94). It has always been normal practise for the engine installer to put a water seperating fuel filter in as the engine was installed but, as you see, some of them didn't do it.

Just get a Merc genuine, or any other brand you prefer, and install it yourself. Fit it to a bulkhead in the engine bay, run the line from the tank to its inlet, and a line from its outlet to the engine fuel pump. Job done. :D

No Title

Finally picked up a water separator off the Net. It is made for a CAT marine gen-set. Got it for $25.00.
Went to local CAT dealer for the fittings. Ouch .... $10 for each plug plus $2 for the o-ring seals. Then for the 90 degree fittings with barbed ends was around $20 or so each, but no stock. So went to local Princess Auto and looked in their hydraulic section. Well, all the fittings, which are rated for fuel as well as hydraulics cost 13.88, taxes in. So I saved close to $50 or more. Glad I shopped around.

Thanks ... I'll check into it and see if something approved is available locally.
