Water in gearcase 225 yamaha

Hi I have water contamiating the outboard leg on my 2003 225hp 4 stroke yamaha i am replacing all seals o rings ect , my query can i replace the prop shaft seals without removing the prop shaft housing ,irecon i can screw 2 small self tappers into the old seals and gently leaver them out,allso what do u think ??. also should the seals face outwards or back to back(stoping oil leaking out and water geting in)

yes
usually though I see the propshaft seal surface destroyed by scratching it when its attempted.
its just to easy to remove the carrier and then you can also replace the carrier orings.
carefuly measure the seal depths on both the propshaft and driveshaft housings. set the seals do deep or to shallow and they will be chewed up very rapidly.
on the yamaha all springs on the seals face out.
carefully clean all housings of corrosion.
while yamaha doesnt specifically reccomend it I use either OMC adhesive M or 3M weatherstrip adhesive on the seal to housing fit, make sure you get no adhesive on the seal lips.
pack the area between the lips with yamaha marine grease or its equivalent.
