Changed out the gear oil this morning and found water coming out first, maybe 100ml of it. I wasn't impressed...

Refilled with fresh oil but took off the prop first, not sure what I was looking for, I'm pretty green when it comes to this stuff. When I looked at the inside end of the prop I saw this gasket seal and thought it could be the culprit. It's pretty chewed up.

Any thoughts? Could this let water into the lower unit? Like I said, I'm not much of a mechanic, so I don't know.

Thanks,

Jay

You might be OK.

The most common entry point for water into the lower unit is the fill and drain plug seals. Replace them. CHEAP insurance.

That is not a gasket it is the rubber hub of the prop. Does look about shot. When it goes your prop will slip and need to be replaced.
Pull the thrust washer (behind the prop) and see if there is any fishing line around the shaft and into the prop shaft seal. If so DO NOT just grab it and pull. You need to work it out as a unit from all ways around the shaft or you will cut the seal. Other then that replace the oil plug seals and tighten them tight.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Did not notice any fishing line, etc, around the inside of the prop area/thrust washer, so that seems to be good.

These blue coloured drain/fill seals looked ok...but I have never replaced them. I have had this motor for about 4-5 years, so I will be on the lookout for a new set. I would think I can find them at any marina.

I will also ask about a new rubber hub and see if I can find a new one of these as well.

Much appreciated info.
