I have a stringer 800 (1985) When I open the lower (bottom one ) unit oil It was full of water. the seal on the plug was gone so I replaced it and drained and changed the oil. the upper half seemed good. Is there any seals that could let water in ? Are they easily changed ? or do I have to take it to the shop?
Thanks

OMC Stringer drive has 3 separate units, the intermediate, the upper and the lower. All three have separate fill and drain plugs. Are you talking the lower as in the very bottom where the prop is?

take the prop off you will see a a seal is there fishing line wrapped around the shaft. if line is wrapped around shaft might be melted and look like it belongs there it doen't is the rubber seal good.there are other seals can't get to them without takeing the lower off. however both plugs should have plastik washers not rubber o-rings. all the plugs should have plastik washers.good luck post again what u find.

The boat is on a trailer at the lake. I am talking about the very bottom one. I am not sure what you mean by 3 I changed the upper and lower Where is the third ?
I did not have any washer I Hope this is where the water got in. The oil was full of water and a little black stuff. I put a rubber O ring on. Where can I get the little plastic washer? the rubber one seemed to work though
thanks for th help I will take a look at it Monday.

The plastic washers are available from sierra, just a few cents each. Get a few extras. O-rings will not seal properly. The third is the intermediate housing. There should be a screw above the upper unit right by the edge of the large rubber transom boot. The screw and washer are #83 & 84 on this diagram: http://12.2.215.22/pub/default.asp?SessionId=f728862009484ec2b078b99331405e5a&Lang=EN&brands=EJ

What did you mean by 'a little black stuff'? If it's little bits of rubber, then you probably have seals that are shot.

About any local Johnson-Evinrude dealer will have the correct washers.
Pull the drain plug off and take it with you,the dealer will fix you up.
Rubber O-rings will not work.Believe me i have tried that before..;)

3 units, the intermediate (1) is where the first ball gear is that mates with the upper unit (2), then you have the lower (3), which is attached to the upper unit. So you are talking the lower unit then, I doubt its the nylon seal around the fill and drain holes, its an internal problem. I would do what chiefalen said, you want to check out the prop seal for starters. To really find the problem, is to vacuum/pressure test it. This is relatively easy to do.

he posted he didn't have ANY washer .thats one place the water got in already!
I bet after putting the O ring in there he's gonna get water in there again.I'll also wager it leaks when it gets real hot out and he ran it in the water.

YEP.....fill her up and put new washers on BOTH screws.....run her and check for water again.....if theres water after running it....then a reseal is in order....probably a job for your local marine mechanic....
