water in lower unit

First I want to say thank you to everyone who has helped me over the past couple of weeks. My 1955 25 hp evinrude has gone for a paper weight to a motor. I had filled up lower unit with new oil when I started. I let it out today and it was tan and there was water. I have not had it in gear yet so everything should be fine. I removed lower unit completely. Should there be a gasket between lower unit and where it attaches. There wasn't when I removed it. Should there be a gasket in impeller housing? And I ring on water uptake tube to go into engine? Thank you.

Normally you would pressure test the lower unit to find the leaks.--------Driveshaft seal / shift rod o-ring / propshaft seal are possible places where it is leaking.

I guess I have it apart now so will replace everything. Just didn't know if there was supposed to be gaskets since there wasn't when I took it apart. Thanks

No gasket where lower unit attaches, and no gasket between waterpump housing and impeller plate. Just the 3 seals racerone noted above, plus ribbon (or spaghetti) seal between skeg and gearcase. All those will come w/gearcase seal kit, plus new drainplug washers.

Good luck!

Well I put it back together and used bike pump to "pressure test" it and it leaked from everywhere (drive shaft, shift shaft, prop seal). Can anyone confirm or correct that this is correct kit for the gaskets? 18-2686? It is a 1955 25hp evinrude 25018. Thanks
