I have a 1992 monark 24' pontoon. I think one of the toons might have water in it. I am thinking about drilling a hole in the back of each toon so that i can drain them. Then weld a fitting in there so that i can reseal them..... My question is. I believe that the pontoons are chambered does anyone know if they have drain holes in the bottom of each section..... OR better yet how would drain it if it were yours?

Re: Water in my toons

If it is not listing to one side and the toons appear to be floating at the normal height it may not be a concern. Both my pontoons have had water sloshing in the toons for the past 10 years. The boat stays in the water all summer but when I pull it out for the winter I can hear water sloshing in both logs....it sounds like a couple of gallons but it has not affected the buoyancy. I do not think that it is a leak as it hasn't gotten worse over the past 5 years. Before that time the boat was constantly launched from a trailer. The logs are vented on the top side so when the warm logs are submerged into cool water it is possible that the vacuum created inside the logs could suck water through the vent holes. This is just my theory.....but how else could you explain why it stopped taken on water after I started leaving the boat in the water all season long?

One side does sit down preatty low. I think that it is the full fuel tank that is making it ride that way. I kinda just want to have a drain so that i can tell people definitively that it doesnt have any water in it.

I understand your concern...one log should not be sitting much lower than the other. I am not familiar with your boat but some boats such as Godrey have OPEN vents on top of the logs that can let in water.

It has three vents one for each chamber. Howewver they have plastic plugs in them. They are also well above water line so i dont think that is the culprit. I have decided that the issue is most of my funiture and 20 gal built in fuel tank are all on that side.

My old toon had the same problem. I drilled a hole in the top at the rear and used a small pump with a garden hose attachment to draw the water out, and then fitted a plug socket in the hole. My pontoons had separate chambers but had a small drain hole between each. By leaving the boat on an incline, all the water drained to the rear.

If it has a leak fix it , putting plugs in to drain it is aband aid fix and doesn't solve you real problem which is a leak, if you have one at all.

With your furniture and gas on one side that will cetainly make the TUBE (Logs grow in the forest) sit lower on that side.

the easiest non invasive way to tell if you have a leak is to pull the boat out of the water, have someone drive forwads a few feet then stopp hard, put your ear on the tube and you will hear if it has water.

Most tubes have bulkheads and the individual chambers are sealed, I have built pontoon tubes for 24 years and have never once reccomended that anyone put drain plugs in a tube, it is a ver large hole under the water line, if you it something and break the plug off you have a really really big leak.

Find out if you have a problem first then fix it.

I have same problem with water sloshing in pontoons. I have red plastic plug at three different places along top of each pontoon. I plan to drill one out and would like to stick a tube in there and suck out water. Could you explain exactly how you did it with a garden hose?

Can you explain exactly how you drained out with a garden hose? The plug hole is smaller than end of a hose.

Depending on your plug size, use the largest copper tubing that will slip through the plug opening and siphon the water out. I contemplated doing this when I first noticed water in my TUBES about 5 years ago but the weird thing is that it has never gotten worse and the boat stays in the water.....go figure!

On my popntoon boat I have a plastic drain plug at the bottom rear of each toon. All I have to do is unscrew them and and see if any water comes out ,so far nothing has.

Are those plastic plugs supose to vent the tubes? I have that same sloshing of water and when I took the plugs out there was a small about of pressure in each chamber.

I have this too. I'm curious if it's not good to have them then why do most boats have them even though they have bilge systems? I know my toons have foam in them as well so I would think the manufacturer doesn't think it's too terrible of an idea.
