I have a 1977 85hp evinrude and just put a new water pump in, when I hook up my motor flusher I get water coming out between the upper and lower housing. and I ran it for a few minutes to check for flow up top and then chekced the oil in the lower unit and it is milky. Does anyone know which gasket i need to fix this.
Thanks in advance.

Did you check the oil in the l/u before you did the water pump ??

Pretty good chance that you need new gaskets under the vent and drain/fill plugs.

The water pump shouldn't affect your lower unit, positively or negatively. You said you get water coming out between the upper and lower housing. Does that mean the water is coming out somewhere in the mid-section of the motor or is it coming out mid-way of the lower unit?

where the lower unit joins the upper half. where it comes apart to replace the water pump. but I also get water in the gear oil.
However I just found out that you are supposed to use a water resistant gasket sealer between the pump and plate even though there is a gasket there. and you have to use the same sealer under the plate. So I took it apart and did that today and will wait till it dries in 24 hours to see if it still leaks.

Re: water in oil

That will get you a little better seal and it will pump water a little better but it shouldn't have anything to do with the water in your gear oil. The water coming out of the midsection is probably not an issue. I would imagine that area is full of water when it is in the water.

For the gearcase, I would change the lower unit seals on the drain and fill plugs first and run it for a while and check to see if water is still getting in there. A little water in there for a little while isn't going to hurt it. If you are still getting water in the gearcase then you could pressure test it submerged, to see if you can find out where the leak is or look at a total reseal job. Since that is a big job I would start with the drain and fill plug seals.
