Water In P-trim oil

I just got a new trim reservoir today (Oildyne pump). Mine was cracked and leaking fluid. When I took the old one off I noticed the oil was very milky and the jug was cracked (from freezing) on the sides. (I've heard they normally crack on the bottom where the 1 bolt goes through). Anyway, I unhooked the lines from the cylinders and pumped oil through them to flush out any oil/water that was in them. The guy I got this POS boat from said he replaced one of the cylinders for some reason. I'm wondering if it was bad and leaking water and he just never replaced the fluid or? If it was a cylinder leaking wouldn't it leak oil from it?
Also, how can you tell if a cylinder (ram) is bad?
I was pushing them in and out and the 'newer' one would pull itself back in (with no lines hooked to it). The original one would slide in and out and stay in either position. Just curious about that one?

Ahhhh, Alpha I (GEN II), makes a big difference on some things. The older Alpha I's had some different trim pumps and cylinders.
The cylinders basically have 2 seals, one to keep water out and one to keep the oil in. So it is possible to have water getting into the system without it leaking oil out.
It takes a special manifold for testing the cylinders and pump, and to check out what is actually causing the problem.
Take it to a dealer and have it checked out. The dealers have the gauge manifold to do the test. Doesn't take long, and is a lot cheaper than throwing parts at it till you find the leak.

That's what I'z thinking of doing. I've looked all behind the engine where the lines go out and I see no evidence of any oil leaks. Ditto for the outside.
Thanks alot for the comeback, I sure do appreciate it!
