a hole in the bellows, loose/corroded clamps, corroded transom housing where the bellows clamp to
Yes, water will migrate into the drive

I've been chasing a leak for a while. I had done bellows change and sealant on the gasket to no avail. This time I replaced the shift shaft seal and bushings. The possibilities, luckily, are not endless. First step is do a bellows replacement.

If you have a leaky bellows, it should be very apparent once you pull the outdrive off. You will clearly see water on the inside of the bellows and possibly see light rusting on the driveshaft. If the bellows leak is bad you will even notice water filling your bilge from leaking past the driveshaft grease seal on the transom.

Thanks Guy's;

I think I found the problem, the rubber gasket ring was not in correctly. Now I need to pressure test the drive to see how it got water in it.

Thanks !

It got water in it from the input shaft carrier seal. It`s only meant to keep oil in not water out.

If by rubber gasket ring, you mean the big one that goes into the bell housing and around the input shaft housing, then you still have a leak to find.

Like Bt Doc said: If there is water in the drive shaft bellows it will pretty much always get into the gear case. The seals on the input shaft are designed to keep oil in. There is no seal there to keep water out since that area is supposed to be dry. Yes, pressure test - but don't consider a little water in the gear oil to be a sign of a bad seal.

You still have to find your leak. Pushed out gasket, bad water passage o ring, bad shift shaft seal, or a bad bellows. Or a case corroded or cracked.

Hope you get it fixed easy.
