Water in the gas

I started my 6 hp johnson last night which ran very well for about 10 minutes. It choked itself out and I could not get it restarted. I found water in the gas. I cleaned the tank and purged the fuel line to the motor. I have pure gas to the carb now but it still will not start. If I put mix in the spark plug holes it will fire momentarily. I tilted the motor up and dumped what water I could get out of the carb and reeds the best I could. Still will not start. Anyone have any ideas?

reload if it were me i would take carbs apart and clean all little passages with compressed air:joyous:

Turn the motor upside down and shake it. This may get the bad gas out of the carb.

Isn't there a drain valve on the fuel bowl of the carb? Usually there is a little bolt or valve on the lower section of the carb fuel bowl to allow you to drain fuel out of them when not being used for a long time. See if there is such a setup like that and open it to drain the old fuel out...

I should have mentioned I drained the float bowl

Are the plugs wet? - dripping wet? oily? smells like fuel? or bilge? carbon fouled?
It may be that you just need to make the plugs new again with either a NAPA dealer or a wire brush
- get a good fuel supply and give her a try then.

You could try a little starting fluid but If your motor is a two stroke go light on the starting fluid. Starting fluid has no oil and you can wash down the cylinder pretty quick. That might get the rule pulling again

Plugs are dry. If I put a little mix in the spark plug hole, it will fire. I got it running for about 30 seconds today, but will not start again. I think I am still getting water from somewhere. I keep trying.

What year is that 6 hp ?

The motor is a 1978. I got it going. Not sure exactly what was going on, after numerous times of putting fuel in the spark plug hole and trying it, it finally started. I've had it down to the river a few times since and it runs well enough for fishing. Crabbing will be another story, it will not idle down low enough without stalling to run the line. I'll have to check that out when I have time. Any suggestions? I'm usually pretty good with motors and electronics but the older I get the dumber I get.
