Can't just lift one side of the PH, but it's out. All the bolts broke.... I've got 4 drilled out. What a pain.

Now the shift shaft caught on the lower cowling, pulled up and twisted when I was lifting the PH. Now it seems to be in reverse, I can't seem to get the shift shaft to spin the other way back to N or F.... Maybe I'm feeling it wrong. Twist the prop in the reverse direction and the drive shaft spins. Turn in the forward direction, and it just clicks.

Well, it could be worse. You could have an inlne six with all broken bolts.... Heat the ones with nibs on them up and grab them with a vicegrip. They should turn out.

The use of a left hand drill bit will at times heat the bolt and catch and back the broken bolt out of the block as you drill it out. The drill bits can be bought on Ebay and at some larger tool supply outlets. This has worked for me several times in the past. JMO

No dice. Tried multiple times. Heated till red hot, let cool, heated a little etc etc.

Hmm didnt know they existed! I tried an ez out. No luck there either.

But i got them all drilled out last night and the mating surfaces all cleaned up. Will reassemble this weekend. Waiting on a gasket for the PH to leg connection.

Anyone know anything about how the shift linkage works? Mine pulled up when i removed the PH and now it seems to be stuck in reverse. If i put pressure on the shift "horn" it will go into neutral, but i have to hold the pressure on it. That doesn't seem right to me. And i cant seem to get it into forward.

If i reassemble it, can i make adjustments by dropping the lower if needed? I dont want to put the PH on and them have to pull it again because the shift linkage is messed up.

looks like i might be dropping the lower next.....

I always remove the gearcase before working on the powerhead. There is too much risk of stripping the crank splines if you leave the gearcase on and install the powerhead.

If the gearcase is in reverse, turn it CW until it clicks into neutral. Set the control to neutral and then install the gearcase.

Gearcase being the lower unit? Turn the prop or the driveshaft? I dont have a clear picture of how the shift mechanism really works.

I appreciate the help, its my first larger outboard.

turn the shift shaft to change the gear from reverse to neutral. Yes lower unit is another (imprecise) name for gearcase.

It doesn't want to turn, if i put pressure on it turn clockwise it will go into neutral, but I have to hold pressure on it.

Ok dropped the gearcase / lower unit. Got it back into neutral (I think) it was 180? off past neutral. (I think)

Git all the mating surfaces cleaned. Drained the lower oil, will replace. Waiting on gaskets now. Hopefully it all does back together!
