WATER NOT PUMPING

I just put on a new water pump kit on my 1973 Evinrude 6 because the key on the impeller broke. (I found that I had a problem because obviously there was no water pumping and the engine was overheating). Now after a new impellor etc., the engine still gets hot. I also noticed no water spitting out the exhaust hole. I took the lower unit off again and tried blowing air up the tube where water is pumped up to the engine. It was plugged. Is that normal or should water or air be able to flow through the cooling passage way? Any ideas on cleaning it out? Thanks

hello
did you try it without the t-stat in place? when was the last time it pumped water ok? if it pumped before the key sheared it should not have clogged by just changing an impeller.
good luck and keep posting

Re: WATER NOT PUMPING

The thermostat is opening okay. I took the head off and found some sort of larvae crammed in the cooling port that goes to the exhaust. No wonder is was not cooling. Now all the ports seem to be open. I'll have to get some new gaskets and probably should get a new thermostat. Hopefully this will take care of it.
