I have a '95 Merc 175 and could see water coming out from the little hole on the outside plate of the water pressure relief valve. I bought the rebuild kit and reinstalled the valve, but water is still coming out of the little hole.

So what should I be looking for now? Other than that the motor runs fine.

Thank you,
Bob

Make sure you have the screw tightened down as far as it can go into the poppet. I had the same problem. Water was leaking through the center screw hole of the diaphragm.

Re: Water Pressure Relief Valve

Thanks Crabcake, I'll check that screw. Assuming that the screw is tight, what other things should I be looking for? Could the increased water pressure mean that I may have a blockage somewhere?

Chumbucket, I keep the boat at Kammerman's Marina...across the creek from Trump Marina and the Coast Guard Station. The motor is carbed.

Bob/NJ

I'll bet that the screw isn't tight. Or you could have a small puncture hole in the diaphragm. (New defective Part?)

Crabcake,

I've been known to have a loose screw or two...I'll double check that and diaphram.

Re: Water Pressure Relief Valve

Can I revive this old post for educational purposes? Well anyway, thanks to reading this post,it was referenced on Drummer0901's problems.
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=022081
I replaced my poppet valve assy a few weeks ago and have not had chance to run my motor until today and opening for salmon is on 7-01-06, so needed to be ready. I started up the motor and sure enough I had water coming out of the vent hole. Took things back apart and right away (after having remembered the above string) I saw that the screw still had some threads left and the poppet and washer were seperating. Tightened the screw until I felt I had it screwed all the way in, reassembled and restarted the engine. No water from the vent hole and then test ran on hose to bring up to temp and then raised the RPM slowly, watching the temp rise (180/190 degrees, 3/4 ways up the gauge) and then when the poppet opened, it cooled right down like it is supposed to do. I don't like to run high RPM on a hose, but only had to get about 2200/2300 RPM and 6/7+#'s water pressure for it to open and cool.
The "pee stream" has also improved considerably, I think the poppet was not fully seating even though it was not full of junk and very little salt build up. This was the orginial 1989 Poppet valve.
